This Indian Head penny stood its ground more than 100 years

Found several days ago 3 feet from the rivers edge. Laying on top of hard red shale almost in plain sight. The river is very shallow and fast moving at that location and the amazing thing is the penny laid there on the shale over 100 years even with the annual fast moving flood water. Has some wear and micro roughness all over but no pitting. The dime was found in the woods today. Both are 1901.

nice finds for this time of year...... i ve often thought about detecting along the delaware river, but there is no native soil left due to all the many floods over the years.... congrats and happy hunting...

Booty, if the Delaware has shale banks then the old coins can't sink. I think they will sit right where they were dropped, even with the flooding. I searched the Raritan river where Rev. war troops crossed. Thats where I found the penny on the shale. Will go back in the winter, right now too many tall weeds where the dirt is. Also found an old horse shoe there in the dirt 20 feet from the river.

Jabbo - Nice save at the river's edge. Hope you can back and give it another sweeping.

Did you check the shore? I still think the blobs, and broken pottery were from a dump. Same that the Indian was in the same area. How about down stream, did you do any water searching? Are there any spots, on both sides of the river, with easy access and egress? Dave. it is probably 60 years since we played along that bit of river, now old geezers and still playing...Think we'll ever grow up? Then again, why? Tried to get out yesterday, flying wampires are horrible. Need to go earlier...

KVM, I searched the bottom of the 10 foot cliff, about a 40 foot strip along the water, where the IH penny was found. Top of cliff has the bottles and stuff. Shallow water, can see the bottom of river from the bank but I have no waterproof detector and I was not dressed to go in the water. River bed is smooth solid red shale, fast moving water, no muddy bottom. I was downstream of the bridge about 300 feet. Was a Rev war troop crossing. Both sides of the river are thick with 3 foot tall weeds right now. No buildings there, don't know why old bottles pieces and chinaware pieces are there. I would need to go back several times to give it a thorough search, maybe I will go back very soon and might wade in the river before the water gets cold, but first I need to make the towel/shoes to keep from slipping on the smooth shale. Duck island is still there, our old swimming hole more than 60 years ago. Did you say "Grow up"? Then what? Sit home, watch TV and become frail and feeble minded, or whatever? The wife loves when I go detecting all day long. I wonder what she's up to when I'm gone.

Jabbo, had to get my grand daughter milk, took a walk to the store, stopped, talked to a guy about his grape vines, asked if I could hit the yard. Fine go right ahead.. House built in 1809, and back yard is part of the old parade ground, which gives me an idea. An going to ask the houses there if I can search their back yards...which are the untouched areas.. I have an extra mower given to me, will sharpen the blade and mow the lawns.. With all this rain, I figure to hold the growth back, a half inch of grass above ground should do fine? The house has the original log cabin covered over. The back yard, and the one next to it, I never finished searching, look undisturbed.. So what's your wife doing? As long as she does not mess with your detectors, who cares. Getting a bit mad, lining up a bunch of spots to hit, and just before I go to the last one, another with more potential shows up...

Congrats
