Well, I still have a hard time recognizing the tones for "gold." I dig a lot of sinkers, bottlecaps, and pulltabs. But, I managed to score these two rings on a private beach that's open to the public off-season. Funny thing is, the forward and backward sweeps had different tones and they weren't low like I thought gold would be. These rings were about a foot deep in the rocks underlaying the sand on the bottom; in about four feet of water. The diamond ring had a high tone and I almost didn't dig it as it was getting late and I had to go home for supper ... glad I dug it

That just goes to show you, with the Excal, I dig all tones that repeat. I can pretty much tell the common tones, but I still always try to dig it all. Some gold rings that I have found have been high and low. I can think of a couple that even sounded like a fart (bottle cap). So, if it's possible then dig all repeatable tones, but just pay attention to what each one sounds like and you will build a memory of the more common tones. GREAT JOB!

If you are going to hunt a beach regularly it is a good idea to dig all tones, even the questionable ones. By digging out the pull tabs and junk you clear the beach for hearing the deeper targets like GOLD, just remember to pack out the junk our you will be digging it all over again.:rage:
Sometimes that questionable tone turns out to be a ring. What a Nice Surprise.:yikes: Lady's rings often sound a little questionable so it is definitely worth digging those tones.

Congrats on taking your PADI,

BDA:cool:
