This was given to me in my change today at a local store...what a surprise! Once in a long while, I will find a wheat penny or even a Canadian penny in my change, but never a half dollar. Kelley (Texas) :)

Hard times are causing people to cash in old piles of coins. I hope you asked the cashier if they had any more. Last week I bought 6 rolls of halves from a bank and found 6 64's and 9 65 to 69's. Last year I pulled 332 silver coins out of circulation, mostly from searching coins from banks. It is easy to do and there is little risk involved. If your are going to go to town, it doesn't cost much to stop at a bank while you are there.

You're sure right about that Kelley. When I hear silver coins like that, I wonder if a kid has gotten in their parents stash. Dave has a thought also. Times are hard and many turn to their old coins. I would think that they would know better not to take them to a bank, but a coin dealer or even a pawn shop. Glad you were able to get your hands on a nice piece of silver, no matter how you found it. Hey, you didn't even have to get your hands dirty on that one! We all know it happens, the kids get into the silver to buy some candy. That is why I took my grand son out with me hunting, I also took a silver half & a 21 Morgan. As I would get a signal I would let him use the pin pointer to find the coin. I hid the half & let him find it then we had a talk. Then again the silver dollar went into the ground & again I let him find it. We talked about the value of the coins & how many kids get into their parents collection. He had fun & I think learned something about the value of old coins.

But just for insurance purpose I told him that if he ever needed money for candy, just ask grand pa & I would give him some paper.

I think a small part of it is the work of children, but many, many, people just don't know and even more just don't care. I work in a grocery store and the other day a woman noticed a log cabin on the reverse of a penny. I explained to her that it was the first of a series of four reverses from last year, honoring Lincoln's 200th birthday. She had no idea. Also this week a young guy and his dad (who is in his 40's) brought me a 1909s VDB penny. "We looked it up on the Internet and we think it's worth quite a bit." I told them no. It was 3 inches in diameter.

When old aunt Martha passes away and her nieces and nephews get together to clean out the house for the auction, all those little tubs and trays of coins are taken to a bank and cashed in for some green stuff. If the teller handling it doesn't notice or care (and most don't) all those coins go into the pot.

A lady I work with had a '64 silver quarter that she said didn't "look right". She asked me if I would give her a "real" one for it. I was most happy to oblige.
