Thinking of getting the F 75 as a backup for my SE

Any experienced Explorer users like the F75. I'm real curious about the plowed field mode, has anyone tried that yet? My SE keeps acting up and I'm going to have to send it in to Vegas, thought the F75 would be my best choice for a fill in and sometimes my very first choice in specific situations. Can anyone push me off the fence? Thanks:detecting:

I have both and for the first time since I bought the XS several years ago I reach for something else first instead of the Explorer. The good thing about the F75 should be thought of as how well the SE and F75 compliment each other instead of compete with each other.

They are great detectors each one will do some things better than the other and vice versa.

You will love the weight and balance of the F75, but will be thrilled by the performance.

That is my experience.

I had an Explorer II and now own the SE. I just bought an F75 about two weeks ago. I have been testing the two head to head by carrying them both and switching one off and the other one on to compare results and here is what I have found so far.

DISCLAIMER: The following statements are my personal opinions and observations made while using both detectors. YMMV!

The recovery time of the F75 is unbelievable. I have tried every imaginable combination of settings on the SE and it cannot compete with the F75 for separating adjacent targets.
The closest I have gotten is to run the SE in IM All Metal using Long sounds in conjunction with a Coiltek Joey coil. This does not technically seperate the targets since the tones run together, but you can pickout the high "silver" tone from the mix. So far this is the biggest advantage that the F75 has over the SE.
I can run the F75 discrimination at 6 which cuts out a lot of the iron and get better separation and response than I can with the SE no matter how it is configured. I have a target in my test bed that is three clad pennies about 1 to 1.5 inches apart at about 4 inches deep. The F75 gives three distinct beeps while the SE gives one solid hit until you "wiggle" the coil over each target independently. I also have a piece of iron buried at the same depth as a clad dime about 2 inches apart. In discrimination mode, the SE picks the dime up if you sweep the dime first but not if you sweep the iron first. The F75 hits on the dime no matter which direction you sweep from. This may not sound too important if you hunt the SE in All Metal unless you are in an extremely iron infested site. Some of the sites I hunt are so bad that my nerves can't handle All Metal for long. With the F75 set at disc 6 I feel that I am still unmasking good targets as well as the SE in All Metal but I don't have to hear the constant drone of iron.

I also have a clad penny buried at 4 inches which is about 2 inches above a large piece of iron. The F75 does a better job of letting me know that the penny is there (audio response). The VDI readout on the F75 is in the dime range due to the iron. I have found that when the SE does pickup a stacked target the audio is more broken but it does a better job of reporting accurate VDI numbers. However, it misses targets that the F75 hits. I have never had the F75 miss a target that the SE hit.

I am hesitant to talk about depth as most of the targets I have dug during the comparison have been relatively shallow (6"-8" at most) and both detectors have sounded off clearly on clean targets.

I really like the SE tones. The F75 tones seem flat and staccato to me when compared to the SE.

The SE is heavier but the hand grip is more comfortable than the F75. This may be due to the fact that I have big hands and the SE's grip is thicker.

I am still more comfortable with the SE in that I am more fluent in it's language than I am that of the F75 but I am learning to speak Fisher pretty quickly.
In clean ground the SE is a great machine but in iron, I think that the F75 is starting to win me over.

I hope this helps.

Nice report Neugene, I really enjoy reading how well my next detector will be like.( should be recieving it in about a week) I would really like to hear about the depth issue when you do come accross a deepy. If the F75 is equal to or better than the SE,I will be very happy.
I did read another person mention the smaller grip, he suggested wrapping tennis racket handle tape around it, so it would make it thicker. You probably already new that, but I thought I'd include it for others that have large hands.
Thanks again for taking the time out to write your observations,
Ken

I feel exactly the same about my X75. It compliments my aresnal. While it will not likely REPLACE my main machine, it compliments it nicely, and does a great job in the areas I have in mind for it. Between Linda and I, we have roughly 14 machines, and I like each and every one of them in their own element. Detectors are tools, and one just isnt enough!! :) :) :) Streak!

Neugene and I live in the same area of East Tennessee. This area is known to decrease detection depth due to the mineralization.

6-8" on a dime is pretty good here. Like Neugene, I don't like to compare depth in this ground.

One thing of note with the F75 is that I've dug my deepest "found" coin with it at 12". Please note that I'm not saying it is a deeper detector than any other. It is just one coin (V-nickel), but it did raise my eyebrows as it hit it pretty solid for that depth and around iron.

I don't think I could say that I would reach for one over the other because of depth though. I will say that both are impressive at depth.

I just got my f 75 yesterday, gonna hunt with it today. It's going to be fun going back to productive places that were infested with iron and picking out some sweeties my SE couldn't SE. This plowed field I'm working had stopped given signals with the SE, will be really interested in that plowed field setting and whether or not the f75 finds more stuff. One thing I noticed while reading the manual is that the F75 REQUIRES a fast sweep speed where as the SE you have to swing slower in trash, that's going to be hard to get out of the habit of slowing down and wiggling verses sweeping shoulder to shoulder fast like. Worse when I pick up the SE again remembering to slow down. I'll let you know how she flies.:detecting:

Oh well, stranger things have happened I suppose!

The gist of my message was "If you must buy, Buy another SE and be miles ahead, you won't have the additional expense of supplying two detectors and you will dedicate yourself to learning one brand detector!" :)

You are probably right on, if I had gotten a second SE then I would be able to compare the two and know when one was screwing up.:rage: However, my intention was to get a faster responding detector for really trashy areas and from what people posted, I thought the F75 would be my best choice.
