Thinking about the 9" 3KHz coil

BoobieinPa

New member
Right now I have the standard 7.5 coil for my X-70 plus these other two.
The 6" round DD 18.75 coil / The 5x10 DD 18.75 coil
Now I am considering the 9" 3kHz coil.
Most of my hunting is for coins & general purpose dirt fishing. I would appreciate any and all comments to help me makeup my mind.
THANK YOU

I've been using the 3KHz lately as I'm working some very old homesites. I know very little of the technical aspects of this coil but, to me it appears to have a certain sound that drops off on iron. This past winter I used it on and off and found my deepest coin yet with my X-70, (about 9").

here are a few of the posts I've made in the past, concerning why I like the 3 kHz concentric coil. HH Randy

Thank you for all the comments. Digger has given me a lot to think about with his links. Thank you also for going to all the trouble to post them for me.
I am now convinced that I will get one. I will let you know how it works when the ground (UNFREEZES).

Hey Bob, I thought I wanted one of those, too. For the same reason as you. I ended up getting one, used it a little but then settled on the 10.5 7.5kHz DD coil. That's the one I use most of the time now. You might want to consider one of those.

If I lived in an area with heavy mineralization, I'd probably be using the DD coils due to their "ground cancelling" capabilities. However, living in an area with moderate mineralization, I am able to get as much (if not more) depth out of a comparibly sized concentric. (takes a bit more overlapping of swaths). As such, the 3 kHz concentric is my "go to" coil for those wide open spaces. Without knowing what type of GB settings are required for someone else, it is tough for me to make that call. My "estimates", based on a few years of testing, is that I prefer a concentric if the GB setting is over a 28. DD seems to work better for me if the GB is less than 28. Not scientific. Just hours of use. Different strokes for different folks. That is what makes this hobby so interesting and entertaining. HH Randy

You folks sure did help me make up my mind. I ordered one yesterday, and it should be here this coming week. Now all I need to do is get out there and swing it. I am curious on how deep it goes and just how small of a target it will be able to pick up on, and the settings that will work best for me.. Most of my hunting will be for coins.

Thank you one and all.
