Thinking about getting AT PRO need advice

Hi everyone,

I do a lot of beach detecting. I have a Minelab Sovereign Elite detector and it is AWESOME for this. However it is VERY heavy even mounting to control box on my side. The arm and coil is heavy. I could detect longer if I had a lighter detector. The AT Pro is looking good to me. What kind of performance do you get on the beach? Have any of you compared it to a Minelab Sovereign? I also want more target ID like depth and ID and the Sovereign doesn't give you that. However the Sovereign goes deep and wont miss much I found two nice rings this week with it.

Thank you for any info you can give me,
Gregg

No offense to the Garrett users (and I'm one of them), but you're using probably the best beach detector around, so why change? Target ID on the AT Pro or any other detector is only accurate for x amount of inches, and in the sand you pretty much want to dig every solid signal. I've been using my AT Pro more and more on the land, but at the beach it's just doesn't compare to the Sov. Now, if your beaches are littered with iron you may prefer the recovery speed on the Pro, but that would be it. What type of coil are you currently using on the Sov?

It came with a 10 inch Tornado. This thing has a heavy arm and coil... I wish they would lighten the next model... I guess I need to man up and start working out LOL. I am just getting over shoulder impingement syndrome. A year ago I couldn't even lift my arms over my head. I hurt both of my shoulders lifting something up stairs WAY to heavy. It really sucks. O well... It is sounding like nothing beats Sov except maybe a new Safari, I hear it is light. I wonder if the new 10" coil and arm is lighter on it... I don't have $1000 bukeroos right now but I can dream. Maybe I'll find s Gold Rolex on the beach LOL. never know, thats the beauty of this hobby.

I have used both I would give the edge to the Soverign on the beach when I use one I use it on a straight shaft and 8in coil not to heavy that way. The PRO does ok on the beach and would be a good back up and better for dry sand than the Sov. I am not a Minelab fan at all because of the way they do business. Will not buy a new one until they make a large change in the way they operate.

Jason,

I was a Minelab dealer for a short while. They took the dealership away from me because I didn't sell any the first year so they wouldn't renew it. I explained I was having personal difficulties but they couldn't care less. O well... I guess that's how some do business. I could see it if someone was trying to get a dealership in my area but no one was. They set up a huge minimum order for me to meet if I wanted to keep it and I just couldn't do it. It's all about money... What issues did you have?

I agree with Jason. Their support/repair is slow as hell, and the fact that the keep raising prices doesn't sit well with most users I know. Garrett's support is WAY better then Minelab's. They do make some great beach detectors, regardless of these well documented issues.

Thank you Bart,

I just might do that when I get the moooola... going to review it more. Would love to try one out... I don't think there is a dealer around here. I live near Pismo California.

I couldn't be happier with the AT pro. I had a well known brand that cost twice as much. Tough to operate and I spent a lot of time in the field making adjustments. The AT has a faster learning curve. Deeper and better discrimination. Less crap & more fun.

The Minelab Sovereign Elite is the detector for beach use. Why not invest 35 dollars in a Doc's Swingy Thingy. I use it on a 6 lb Whites. Set it up right and it takes all the weight stress off and swings like a feather. Its a little restrictive when bending down on one's knee's because its a harness, but still well worth using it. I wouldn't give up on the Sovereign. Great beach machine.

I didn't like mine. I couldn't decide to push down on the ends of the swing or to pick up in the center of the swing. Gave mine away (and paid postage) to a person that promised to send me something for it. Didn't even get a thanks on email. I guess he thought I did him a disservice.

Thanks guys,

I actually do have a swingy thingy I got for my wife. I have not tried it as I like to put my detector to the side when I did a deep hole. I feel it will just get in the way. My arm is getting stronger now that I have detected a few days. i still is heavy to me but I detected for 4 hours on the beach yesterday without wearing out. i did get tired a few times but rested a little then kept on going. Just way out of shape I guess. I am getting better though. Thanks for all of the advice!

I have had many with minelab. The price raises even though they have went with cheaper labor. They make small changes to detectors and sell them as better. I would not give $10 difference for the first sovereign that came out and the new one what ever they are calling it today. Would say the first was built better than the new ones. Forever to get a detector fixed. Called on one detector a old relic hawk I had looking for info on where and how to get a battery. They were no help at all just said we don't have them good luck. Some one on the fourm was nice enough to tell me where to order one and how to set it up or I would have had a useless detector. Way over charging for repairs. Will not sell parts so you can repair your self. How I could go on forever. I will not buy a new minelab until they make some changes. They are good detectors just don't like the way they do things.
