Think my Ace 250 has a problem?

If I hold the coil close to waist height with the pinpoint button held in & making a loud tone, then lower it towards the ground, the detector goes silent about half a foot above the ground. Might this indicate the internal ground adjust is way far off for my ground? Any other possibilities? I have to think maybe I shouldn't have bought a detector without auto tracking. Wonder if it is saleable as is? If I sent it in to Garrett, how could they know when they had it matched to my soil? Would I have to send them a soil sample? I'm a little afraid to open it up & adjust it myself- should I be afraid to do this? Thanks for any advice. HH, George (MN)

Why would you even conduct a test like that with a fixed GB machine. It serves no purpose whatsoever and proves nothing.

I wonder if I understood what you wrote. If the fixed GB seems pretty negative to my ground should I still get about the normal depth? My air tests & planted coin tests seemed pretty normal. Are they the best indicators that the detector is working properly? Thanks for any response. HH, George (MN)

I don't think I understand the relevance of what you have written either. I'll try this with my ace 250 later this week.
The way I pinpoint though is to find something, move the detector off to the side, push the button, and move it back. I find that it is pretty sensitive; so sometimes I move it up over the target to find the point where the signal fades out and then I move it parallel to the ground.
At first I had a problem with pinpointing - now I can get a tight read on the target.
Pushing pinpoint shifts the detector to the all metal mode. I think it may also pump the sensitivity up as well. I normally run sensitivity at 4 bars.

Why would you conduct a GB test starting waist high?? Your machine auto ground balances and is not going to work properly from that distance to the ground. Set the machine sensitivity to four or five bars and keep it close to the ground in the coin mode and go find some silver.

If your air tests and planted coin tests were successful then your machine is normal. The GB on these and other fixed GB machines are set at the factory by balancing them to a hunk of ferrite so that they will work pretty much everywhere other than in extreme conditions like wet salt sand, black sand, gold bearing areas.

Don't know what kind of warrenty is on your machine but as new as they are,if you open the control box you will probibly void the warrenty.Give it a little time and get used to the machine.

was exactly the response I was hoping for! I hope nobody thought I was trying to bash the Ace 250 or Garrett in general.
I should perhaps explain that I took the Ace 250 to some '60s athletic fields and I detected for a little over an hour. Besides a nickel that I eyeballed, found only a zinc & a clad dime, both 1" deep & thought "I can't remember ever doing this bad here".
I know this was a pretty short test & only at one place, essentially cleaned out on my previous few hundred visits there. Still I sensed that wasn't the entire explanation. I thought about it awhile & think I have the answer.
I'm used to detecting with my White's MXT with the DD coil that's essentially the same size as the coil on the Ace 250. But the wide scanning DD coil is probably able to cover much more ground in the same amount of time as the non-DD Ace 250 coil. Mystery solved, I think.
So now the question is what to do with the Ace 250. I guess I will experiment some more with planted coins to determine if I can sweep it really fast without losing much depth or ID accuracy. If it passes that test, OK I'll try again. If not I may just put it in the closet until Garrett has a DD this size or larger, or a larger non-DD. But I also want to do a test to see if the Ace 250 can get a probable coin ID deeper than the MXT.
I agree the Ace 250 is very good for the price, but for covering much acreage with low trash & few coins, I really do need a different coil. Anyone have any news from Garrett about a bigger coil? HH, George (MN)

Comparing concentrics to DD's is like apples and oranges. You can't expect a concentric to match a DD in coverage but these Proformance coils cover a lot of ground compared to the old Crossfire II.
And the 250 has lightning fast response and recovery speed so you actually will find it very diffcult to swing it fast enough to miss a target and with the 250 you will actually gain depth the faster you swing. Another plus.

Have you heard rumors? Trouble with big coils is they increase the weight and ease of handling which defeats one of the main attractions of this machine.
Bill

George, I don't know if you read my previous post, but I'm hoping everyone with an Ace 250 will join me in asking Garrett to consider adding the 5x10 elliptical coil to the Ace 250 coil lineup.

Bill ,i was asking Mary about DD coils and if there would be one for the 250. She does not think there will be one but says there maybe a larger coil coming out. I have no idea what size. I like the DD coils and thought it would be a great addition for the ACE series but maybe Garrett does not think it needs one.

They will if enough users make enough noise about one. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
