How many of you have tried a few different detectors? And how many of you kept some of those detectors and why?
I had a X5 got rid of it fast, didn't like the way it was laid out, didn't like the way it worked.
I had a Explorer, didn't understand it and it was hard to get it to stop falsing.
I had a DFX and loved it but it had no depth and after all of the years I have been detecting I want depth!
I have a CZ3 and have found it to be innovative and deep. Not as good on modern day parks and fields (which I hunt a lot of) but it did find some great old deep coins out here in the bay area! Now I live near Sacramento.
I have the CZ70 pro and found it to do a better job on modern day parks and schools. Likes to find coins grouped together and coins mixed with iron or trash. Has some nice depth and the relic tone has found me some junk jewelry and zinc pennies and a few old keys. No old coins but a lot of flip tops. This machine like the CZ3 loves nickels. I come home with at least one third of my coin count being nickels.
Gold has been a problem on all of my detectors if you want to dig the trash I'm sure you will find some gold and of course you can dig deeper targets but that has not worked. I have dug pull tabs out of the ground at six inches. When are they going to deal with that problem if NASA can put a man on the moon can't NASA TOM help us find more gold???
So I'm looking at different detectors, I guess I am always looking at different detectors and they all seem to be the same just work differently. The DFX was a radical machine you could do so much programing on that machine and tailor fit it to your needs. It is so cool but I couldn't program the depth so it was a trade off.
I have looked at the NEWFORCE R1 and the COINSTRIKE and after I have read all of the other reviews on different detectors no one has anything bad to say. The forums are great but if you are a White's guy that is it and so on. You can't ask a question on their forums with out getting them mad and ready to lynch you.
So is it more of the middle of the road detectors coming out and no high end. And how come there are no rumors out there to keep this hobby alive. All the big boys have not really come up with anything really new and different. And the forums are the ones that are keeping the big boys alive and yet no one knows anything about what is coming out next.
Am I all alone here?

Indeed there is no perfect detector and most have several to handle different situations..Nice post but had no problems myself with the Explorer relative operation it just broke my back..Unfortunately so many objects mimic gold rings and they themselves fall all over a meter and in reallity if one came out the parks would be cleaned out of gold jewelry and just take something out of the hobby..Remember the thrill of the search is what keeps us going so find one that suits you and learn it well as you will be able to cut down the odds relative gold jewelry versus junk that mimics it and to quote an old phrase( only true discriminator is a shovel)In addendum they can find gold mines from airplanes but costs millions and metal detectors are really getting high priced and would be cost prohibitive as if the technology was available most wallets could not handle it...

that I have kept for my land hunting arsenal are the Shadow X5 (which is my #1), the Minelab Explorer and the Fisher CZ3D. These are the units which I find are the best for ME. I'm fortunate in that I can have any detector/s I want and there's nothing out there right now that I even want to try but something will eventually come along that will catch my eye and then I will try it. In my ground the three I have are all very deep detecting units that have features that I favor. We each have our own opinions on what's best for our hunting and thankfully we have Troy Shadows, Whites, Fisher, Minelab, Garrett, and Nautilus, all top of the line units to choose from plus some lower level units available also. All I can say to everyone is find the unit or units which do what you want and HAVE FUN! That's what it's all about.
Good hunting, ArtWI

There's plenty of machines on their way...eventually. The most exciting are the P.I. discriminators and radar based machines. At the moment though its still all the old models with a twist or new feature.
The Coinstrike had one problem that should not bother you and thats that it has areas where its not so good so a second machine is needed.
The C-Scope/Newforce is similar to the XLT but with less adjustment options and more importantly not the range of coils (only 2). Its also a little heavy and the balance didn't suit me. I can always get more performance out of the XLT.
Best seller in the U.K. at the moment is the XP Goldmax. Not a gold machine but a coinhunter similar to the X5 Shadow but with the option of detecting in an all metal mode with an adjustable iron tone. Fantastic sensitivity.
What about the Wilson Coinselect that KellyCo are now selling ? Specifically aimed at high trash areas. I've only seen one report on it but the user said it was now his machine of choice.
