Subject: Search engine limitations

IP: **********

Your search engine has severe limitations that does not serve all users
equally well. If you key in T2 (teknetics model) or V3 (white's model) you
get no search results. No matter what search criteria is used. Now on the
other hand, if you key in E-Trac, you get all the E-Trac posts. Can you
please fix this so all users are served in a fair manner.

Thank you

It's definitely a software thing and not discrimination like you are coming
up with. Probably because of the lack of letters in your description it
probably has a mathematical algorithm preventing it from looking at 2 and 3
letter words which could theoretically call up half the posts out of
millions overloading the system. So go for a different conspiracy theory
would you?:ranting: (I added the icon)

I just tried Whites V-3 and it did fine while an E-Trac would be a pretty
easy thing to pick out where the two letters V3 probably bring up the red
flag I just spoke about.

The following was my reply to the above email from the webmaster:

Thank you for the timely reply. As a computer specialist I also concluded that it was a algorithm based issue. What I don't appreciate is your incredibly RUDE response "So go for a different conspiracy theory would you?" If you wish to ban me, go right ahead. I would rather be banned than patronize a website run by ill mannered boors.

You have been a guest on a privately owned forum for four days and have discovered it's search feature "does not serve all users equally well"....:surprised:.... and you accuse "staff" as an ill mannered boor...............:nopity: Nothing is keeping you here............ audios......

Terradigger ... I think you are the one that has the thin skin.
There is a saying about taking and dishing out ... cant remember it now ... but there has to be one.
You tossed a rock at them with your comment "not serve all users equally well" and they tossed one back a you.
I see no rudeness on their part ... if I did I would surly say so here and now.
Even in your reply you stated that you understood enough about programing to see why two or three letters might be a search problem.

Fair is fair and need you be reminded that you that this is a "private" forum and you are here by granted privilege?

Sometimes, I need to remind myself of that fact when I start feeling like someone has stepped on my "rights" as a user here.

Stick around for a while if you are really interested in metal detecting.
Of course you can always start up your own forum and make it exactly as you want it.

Terradigger C YA !!!! do you understand those three letters LOL:nopity:

TerraDigger,
I'm a short-timer too. I understand both sides of this situation. You being familiar with search engine criteria should tell you to expand your search. V3 into google you get 158,000,000 results. However if you enter E-Trac you get 1,770,000 results...approximately 1.5% of the results of putting V3. If you enter Whites V3 you get 192,000 results. Did you attempt to expand your search criteria? Or was your first instinct to complain? Either way regardless the response you received was unprofessional.

RJA2008,

I was using V3 and T2 utilizing the "Exact Phrase" search criteria as V3 & T2 are how these detector models are most frequently typed in the user posts on the Forums. Using the "All Words" or "Any Words" search criteria would cause a overload. I just assumed the search engine here would be refined enough algorithmically to process a V2 or T2 search inquiry using the "Exact Phrase" search criteria.

Ok, well I understand now. Your response to me being so defensive in nature sheds light on the fact that you will not be satisfied. Regardless that overall I agreed with you about thinking the response from the help desk was unprofessional. You just wanted to argue! LOL! :starwars:

Hey Terra, With this forum you will have to get used to this kind of treatment. People ( especially system admins ) like to move things, ban people and other things that make them feel like they have power. Hell I might just get banned for this statement. Oh well you cant win them all. I have enjoyed the people I have met here but have seen my fair share of segregation based on a statement or a belief. There are apparent hidden rules of this forum like don't put up links to anything that is not paying them money and don't mention anything about what service issues you may have had with a paying sponsor. and don't ever compare detectors it hurts peoples feelings when you do this. the best way to stay out of trouble here is just to read the posts. HH:drinking:

Im sure this post will now be removed or blocked, sorry.

WoW, where are the black helicopters and guys with wrist watch transmitter and ear buds. Guys, this a petty issue. The response was unprofessional. That's it! But it was not like the person with the help desk drove to you house and urinated on your kids. As far as "no links to other sites not sponsoring" that is basic. Anywhere that is sponsor-driven(ad driven) like this forum is; has to provide some kind of assurance to it's sponsors that their competition isn't going to get free advertising. What reason would there be to be a sponsor then?

TerraDigger, how much expectation could you have with a free site. Please explain to all what your expectations were? The staff here, more than likely, did not build the forum from the ground up. It is probably a template based generic forum with few options on modifying the search engine.

montanagold, do you have examples of your allegations or is it just hear-say? The footer at the end of your message "Check out Anaconda Treasure on facebook for all of your coin drooling needs" appears to contradict your accusation of "There are apparent hidden rules of this forum like don't put up links to anything that is not paying them money..." & yes I know it isn't a link. But the way you talk the prison guards of the forum would have booted you for that. I will pay both of you $2 each....wait let me check my piggy bank...ok, I will pay you each $2.37, a Peter Piper Pizza token and a yellow marble if you don't discuss this anymore......hahahahaahahaha!

You have to realize how often we get accused of favoring one brand or
another. Your statement that we were somehow favoring one brand or user over
another didn't endear yourself to us.

Here's what you said...

Can you please fix this so all users are served in a fair manner.

If you're not implying that we're not being fair with the way we set up our
search engine then what would you describe your statement?

I think you've already stated that you already understood the problem. I'm a
bit confused to why you asked me anyway based on the experience you have in
this area.

Anyway we're not going to make each other very happy with this so just let
me say we don't try to give anyone the run around on a search engine. If in
your day to day doings on the computer you run into a good search routine
you think we could get written into our forum software please let us know.

All the best and have a great holiday.

Thanks for the follow-up:

As I look at the words I used, in a grammatic context, I can see where it would appear that I was insinuating favortism. Poor use of grammer and words. I was just taken aback at the response.
It's done now.

You have my permission to delete the post if you wish as I think it serves no useful purpose. I hope there are no hard feelings or predjudice for me expressing my opinions.

Thank you

Nice! Appreciate the heads up on this. Now we can all be positive!

Try searching for t2* or "t2*", and v3* or "v3*".

I believe the asterisk allows for two and three digit searches.
