They Got Me! OUCH!!!

I got my X-Cal today. Confirmed some of your suspicions, it is a short shaft set up for diving.
What they really got me on is they did not furnish the battery charger with it.
The info I was able to gather about the X-Cal was all on the newer units and, I think, they come with replaceable AA cell batteries in the battery holder, rechargeable are optional. Since the information is very limited on the MineLab Site until you register and you cannot register without a serial number, the information was not available and there wasn't anything to alert me about the power pack being rechargeable.
I will say that MineLab did send me an instruction manual via email but by then the bidding was already closed.
The bolt holding the coil to the shaft is SS with a carbon steel wing nut. Shouldn't that all be plastic?
Well, looks as though I am dead in (or out of) the water until I can power this thing up. <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug"> <img src="/metal/html/help.gif" border=0 width=23 height=15 alt=":help">

Yes, the coil bolt should be plastic - get rid of that stainless thing. And all Excal's should have come with the complete full length rod, regardless of how old. Someone must has worn out the middle rod and left you with the shortie.
I think all of them also would have come with rechargables. Since you are out one, suggest that you spend the $ to get a 30 hour NiMH battery from Sunray.
Good luck - once you get her running you'll be happy with ML.

Remember when you e-mailed me about the excaliber and I told you that it looked like it was set up for diving and they might not send you a rod with it? The thing with e-bay is that you have to read word for word and in the picture it was displayed in diving mode. The machine was also not the original owner and the person that sold you the machine just bought the machine to resell it. That is what happens if you don't read the find print. Now that you put the money out for the machine you are going to have to buy a rod for it like I e-mailed you about. Also you will have to buy a battery and the one Dan suggested is a good one to have. You are also going to need a battery charger for it. Sunray also sells a battery charger for their batteries. Sorry that you had this problem Lee. If I were you I would build a stem like Va. Beach Max told you how to build and try the unit out just to make sure there isn't anything else wrong with the machine. If there is send it back to minelab and have them check it over and make sure everything works on it so you don't have any more problems. Being new at this you will see that you just can't buy a machine without all the other stuff such as a battery charger or new battery. It may be costly at first but it will pay for itself in time. Good luck! HH

Hi Diane, Remember I told you it was posted by a resale shop? Now that I got it I see that it was from a hock shop. No telling how many owners it has had or where the missing parts have gone.
It has a coil cover but it's loose and falls off. That should not be a major replacement. Are the coils the same on old and new detectors? Don't want to get a new cover and find that it is for a new coil.
If I can find any tech info on the charger I may be able to charge it up enough to verify that it works before I sink any more $$$ into it. Which battery pod terminal is +?. I think it is the top one. I read 2 volts. What should I get from a fully charged pod?
The listing said that it worked but I doubt they were able to try it without a charger. I've sent them a note and am waiting to see what they have to say.
The sticker on it says it was purchased or (later serviced) from Reilly's Treasured Gold in Florida. Looks as though it hasn't traveled very far till now.
I'll keep you posted on how I fare with this.

The specs for the minelab charger are...Output 14.3v DC 60mA so R.S. should have a charger all you need is to find one with the proper plug.... Any 110 wall charger for the Sov would work too as they have the same outputs..That should give you enuff info to get you going...HH...Geo

How do you get the end cap off the battery pod? How do you get the end caps off the control pod? I will try it with 8 alkaline batteries to see if it works before I start pouring more $$ into it.
Do you know the actual operating voltage of the control circuits? For instance, I know my Whites MXT will operate down to 8 volts but has a 12 volt battery pack, same as the X-Cal.
I wish I could find some technical manual on this thing, over and above the standard operaters manual.
I have read that you pry off the red (or yellow) cap on the knobs to tighten them up. How or where do you apply pressure or insert your knife point? I don't want to break them. Are the old red caps different than the new yellow caps?
If anyone wants to send me a picture or something, my email is: lawalkowski@chartermi.net Of course, if you post it everyone else will get a chance to see it too.
