Went out yesterday for a detect and took the misses along. We went to a hilly area and drove in about 1/2 a k on a pretty rough rocky track.
This place is 60km from home base. There was a bog on the track so I had to turn back, real tight narrow spot, and then "bang" the clutch pedal hits the floor dead as a door nail, engine stops, locked in reverse. My mind went blank and numb at the same time. No choice as there was zero mobile phone signal but to hike it out to a house somewhere with a landline. Walked out and then about 3ks to a house, no-one home, another 2 ks and a kind women let us call someone. I rang a tow truck from home town thinking "great here goes a few hundred bucks". He reckons he has to call me back in an hour or two. Cant wait at this strangers house so have to hike it into town where ill get a signal for the call back. Another 4 ks walking. The misses was strangley calm about all this, hmm. Guy rings and says "mate im a couple of ks from you be on the roadside". He rocks up in the tower and im thinking "mate hes gonna freak when he sees where im broken down". We get there and he says "you guys walked all this way". But he drives in no prob or grumbling. Does something with the clutch fork and cable and recovers me just enough movement to get going. 1CM movement from foot flat to the floor and clutch engaged. He says better to drive it than hook up, "dont worry ill follow you home if theres a prob we,ll hook up and tow". Get home ask him "mate how much" expecting a decent bill.
He says "mate dont worry about it, couldnt leave you out there like that, your a customer". He works for the local parts shop.
Can you believe that, in this day and age? Yep , theres still some good ones out there.
