got to get that top tier of clad cleared out first.---My wife & I almost always detect together & I have never seen anything like this in all my years of detecting (maybe others have, but I haven't).----About a year and a half ago we "discovered" an area that was literally "carpeted" with clad coins.---In one days detecting, we recovered 677 coins----consisting of 186 quarters--230 dimes--20 nickels--236 memorial pennies & 5 wheaties.---I was so "pooped" before it was over with, I could hardly swing my detector, my wife had gotten so tired she went & set in the car. :)---It's in an area that we just KNOW there has to be older (and deeper) coins there.---In fact, I have recovered a Seated Liberty dime there at about 6".---So far though, the only "old" coins we have found there is that S.L. dime & those 5 wheat backs.----We're going back & are really going to concentrate on doing some deep hunting now that the top stuff is fairly well cleared out.---The area is a long ways from where we live & we don't get there that often so have to make the most of it when we do get there.------Best regards-- keep ah huntin & have fun.----------Del

Hey dell

I have found old silver that was covered by clad in this old historical house that is about 130 yrs.old. I first went in and cleaned it out with a Tesoro then went back in with a white's XLT and then started to find the deeper good stuff like mercs, barber dimes, indian head pennies and cool old relics. I believe you are doing a yard cleanout sale!

Thanks Pal----We're goin back!---You never know until you swing the thing (a couple of different things--detectors)--and different coils----and from different directions!!  ------Del

Del, you may have to go back a few times before you find what you're after.
That sure was a heap of clad coins your wife and you pulled out. Great haul.
You probably already removed a lot of rubbish, but you may have to remove
more before you find the old stuff....possibly find more and older clad too.
I for one, will be interested to find out how you get on. Good luck and HH

How well do you know the history of this site? And have you confirmed that information with another source? I don't know what type of location it is, but if a festival or flea market or whatever has been held on this site for years, maybe it started after the switch to clad. Or maybe the area was covered with fill at one point. Or maybe someone else cleaned it out pretty good years ago. I think your wheat to penny ratio is about right for recent years. Your nickel to coin ratio seems pretty low. Lower discrimination may help reveal something that is masking the old silver.

I wish you the best, take care, Dave

Thanks Dave----I believe the site old enough to hold old coins.--I'm going to check in further with locals as to the age, history, etc.---It MAY have had fill added at some point.---I think half the battle was getting the top stuff cleared out.--It's one of those places that you just have this "gut" feeling that there are old targets (coins) there but they are going to be deep.---We're going to go back in with our Etracs & a couple of other detectors set up "hot" & "opened up" & REALLY concentrate on the deep, difficult hits/targets-----STAY TUNED!---------Del
