Theory on Lawn Mowers

It seems you are always learning something. I have been searching an old house now the few outings and have been frustrated. I am finding fist fulls of coins but nothing old. I have also discovered coins everywhere they really should not be. I discovered that almost all the Zincs have nicks in them. The guy that owns this house rents it out and mows lawns on the side using Commercial grade movers. I really think now that the mowers are picking up these fresh drops and scattering them everywhere. I am betting he mows really close which causes the mower to suck up the coins easily.

For sure.I have found hundreds of mower hits.In dry conditions the mower will pull the plugs up also making detectorist believe something is digging up there holes.Hopefully the good coins were dropped in the fall and had a chance to miss the mower.:-D

Wow pulling up the plugs is really bad. Never saw that but it is incredibly dry right now.

Never heard of that either. But I can see how it could happen if the plug is not inserted firmly (good foot stomp to pack it tight) I too have found plenty of mower blade hit coins

I think you could be correct. Over the years I have found coins either nicked or bent.

Yeah, I find myself hammering the bent ones flat and running them through the coinstar...at least a half dozen mower hit coins per week. Rings and jewelry take a beating from those mowers too..

My pet peeve with lawn mowers:

I do not understand why people run over aluminum cans with a lawn mower, too lazy to pick them up I guess. I hate can slaw with a passion, it's worse trash than nails.

In one park that I've hunted, you need a metered detector to avoid the can slaw, it's that carpeted. I think the park mower guys make a game out of it, more points per can:thumbdown:

use tooth picks to keep the plug in and they will bio degrade, yep he is cleaning out the bottom of his bagger and throwing handfulls of zincs in the yard, lets hope the penny goes away soon , you know I get exited now when i find a copper one, I dont even think about finding a silver coin . How the crown has fallen from my head

Unfortunately I think we are nearing the end of coins in general. The debit card is now the norm. Only one good thing is that it might be easier to find rings.

The good thing about school grounds, is that kids don't carry debit cards :)I believe that the drops will continue in those places.
I am lucky to have witnessed the school grounds keepers using those long handled grabbers to pick up trash in my area, so I have dug very little can slaw. I have also pulled my share of bent coins.

They have closed at least a dozen little area schools this year that used to be great hunting...they even tore out the playground equipment, auctioned off all the desks and whatnot...Now all the kids instead of walking to their little neighborhood school, get bussed to one or two big ones...they are built like a prison, big fences and locked gates..also no more summer league baseball..the parks are not being mowed, just letting it all go to hell. So yes, we detectorists are probably the first to notice changes like no fresh clad anymore, or no outdoor play for kids etc...sort of seems kids are getting scarce...hardly ever see them out riding bikes or generally dinking around at all...

Things have changed so much.Kids do not do as they used to do.They have virtual reality now.No more real reality. It is like a ghost town out there during the summer.Only the gang banger's walking around shooting detectorist with air rifles and stuff like that:-C

they are built like a prison, yes I have always seen scools as prisons, I tried skipping out when yunger but they threatened my parents, and sent me back to the death camps. thank God I was liberated ,

Have an early 40s wheat penny bent in a 45

What gets me is they do it in sports fields (namely soccer), where the kids are in shorts and often make heroic moves which cause them to end up sliding across the ground.
I've actually ben permitted to continue my hunts in a few fields where the groundskeepers frowned on detecting, once they saw some of the items I've removed.
I now take a couple of those items so that I have them in my pouch just in case I'm approached again. PDA styluses, huge safety pin, metal rods, etc.

Who ever came up with the idea of carrying all the Junk in a plastic bag really had a good idea. That small dig in the ground will heal but the scar from a cut will be there for life.

That is why all detectorist should carry a pinpointer.I had the pi pistol probe.I really liked it but it did not holed up.I want to get the silent vibration treasure wise.
