The X70 made me say baaad words, but it wasn't on Easter.

I had a little chance to get out Sat. last with the X70 HF elliptical to play submarine. I was going back and forth between Prospecting mode & Coins. Prospecting was IM=5, Sens=30, Auto-Track on. Coins was -2 and above accepted, Sens=28, Auto-Track on.

The Bluefish is pointing to a piece of aluminum that caused me to lose my mind while using Prospecting mode. Finding it in a small pile of sand in my plastic beach shovel with the probe was very hard. Only sporadically would the probe give a weak indication when right on it from a certain angle. Yet the X70 would scream when I waved the shovel near the coil. I walked away three times since I just couldn't see it, because it's irregular shape & color caused it to blend in. But I kept thinking to myself, I might be passing up a small stud earring. About twenty minutes later I finally isolated it.:rage:

Mr.Crab is pointing to a tiny aluminum punch press blank that was found in Coins mode. And it took about five minutes of chasing around in the shovel to land her. Because of it's round shape it is an easier target to discern, but both objects show what the X70 can do in either mode.

Hey BarnacleBill,

Next time, take a handful of the sand in the shovel and pas it across the coil. If the target is in your hand, put half of that sand in your other hand, and pass your hand across the coil. If you get a beep, drop the other hand of sand and repeat the process until you isolate the target. Shouldn't take more than a minute. I've used that method to pull earth colored pistol percussion caps from the soil that are much smaller than that aluminum punch out. I don't use a pinpointer anymore. Don't need it.

Hope this helps,

Thanks OT, I use that method in dry sand and it works well. But this is 32degF water and I am wearing textured waterproof gloves. So the cold wet sand easily sticks to the glove, which could include small objects like the above.

But I do use a variation of the method you mention if working a shoreline, which I was since the ice was only melted out a few feet from the shore. I take a shovelful and walk towards the shore, and locate a target free area in All Metal mode. I then drop several small piles of sand to isolate the target. Once isolated, I scoop the pile up in the plastic beach shovel, step back into the water, and use a panning motion with the beach shovel. Heavy objects like split shot settle to the bottom of the shovel. But sometimes aluminum objects escape and leave the shovel. Then it's time to re-scoop and use the probe as a last resort, 'cause the Vibraprobe being a PI makes big noise in headphones, no matter what detector I use.

BarnacleBill, I had a target once took me 30 minutes to find...the back of a button. Thing was so small but made a huge racket on my detector. So here I am walking towards my friend to show him and I drop it. But I didin't realize I had dropped it until I get to where he is detecting. Needless to say I didn't feel like sweeping the 40 foot path I had walked towards him.

Till this day I won't hunt that section of the park because I do NOT want to find that little bugger ever again !!!
