The wimpy side of me:biggrin: ..........

I have about finished "processing" my chickens (the meat birds). That is never nice work as most know. I have been accustomed all my life to doing this sort of thing, from the early days on the ranch through my hunting career.

So i have 4 birds left to do of the 12. I let them get bigger to be roasting birds but they grow so fast! The ones you get when you have fast food chicken, "Colonel Clucker" etc, are usually 4-1/2 weeks old believe it or not! I did my fryers at about 6 weeks and they were nearly half again bigger than store bought fryers! I let them free range and did not even force feed them.
One of them is bigger than the others and quite adventurous, he travels around with the laying hens some but looks like a dang Turkey compared to them. I just had to nickname him "Lurch" cause that is what he does, at about 12 lbs and gaining he waddles and lurches! He follows me around the yard as well as he can, taking a rest every 10 ft or so, you see i made the mistake of feeding him worms from the garden.......:nono:
Now i am having trouble with the thought of butchering this dang PET! Gad i'm getting old......or maybe just around wimmen too much and need to get out and do some "man" things:rolleyes:

Naming a food critter is always a mistake!!

Especially when kids or someone who is a kid at heart are involved!!!

Best to Ya,

CJ

thus far we have 65 meat birds and 15 turkeys... And, like you, it is not a thought or a job I enjoy.......... except in winter when we are eating them. :):

As big as he is, the meat will probably have to be used in a chicken pot pie or chicken soup. The chicken is probably more useful as a pet than for eating, he can be good entertainment for you! I say spare him. Kelley (Texas) :)

i don't think he would like that:biggrin: He will make a good small Turkey, but it is tempting to keep him as you said.
They are very prone to heart attacks at this size, i have seen that before, some getting to 14 lbs or more but most don't make it. Their legs give out and they cannot walk, just sit there and eat till they die because they are bred for that. Sad but true.

He can sleep in a cardboard box in the corner of your bedroom this coming winter. You indicate that this is a smart chicken, right? That being the case, teach it to do some tricks and then you might get to appear on some TV program and become famous. Heck, you could sit on some street corner with a music box...tie the chicken to the music box,,,then when you start making music, the chicken could do a simple dance. Have a large mason jar off to the side with a note saying, "Donations to the W. Williams Chicken Foundation." Yes, I still vote to keep him for a pet...maybe the pet could make you lots of money in return. Kelley (Texas) :)

from lunch to Lurch. :D
