The Western Relic Hunter May 2006

Sometimes while relic hunting, one stumbles into that fantastic site that produces many relics that you dream of finding. Fortunately, for me, a detecting site like the old days was discovered this early spring. Visions of plates and guns and satchels of coins were spinning around in my head. My New Years goal of 100 military buttons on the year was shattered at this site. A few folks upon learning of the new success site on the internet forums emailed me or simply commented that they could only dream of a site like that to hunt. Not being of the selfish type, I invited a few of them that could make it on a relic hunt to the site. I was positive that they would dig buttons, and if luck would have it, someone in the group would pop a coin or a plate! I had gone to the site on the previous Tuesday to make absolute contact with the landowners and make it clear with them what was going to happen on the weekend. Sure would hate to have a group show up from different corners of the United States, and then be asked to leave for some sort of miss communication. That was not to be, the definite OK was given!

While we were already at the site, Ed and I decided to give an old field that we had hunted in the past a few swings, as we had not hunted it for over a year. The finds were sparse, but eventually a nice civil war breastplate appeared! I was jumping up and down as I hollered to my relic hunting buddy Ed. He simply shook his head and said my star was shining again. I called my wife and she said,

OK John.......looks like I am gonna have to fire up the bus, load up my detectors, and head north up I-25 to look you up!!!

Great outing you guys had, with some awesome results!!!

Thank you for the post, and all the pictures. Got room for another RV on your next outing???

but found out that that is the last outing on that site. Seems too many folks have been asking to hunt there now and with the added adventure, the owners wife called it quits. Oh well! Time to find a new location.

I understand.....and I hate it when that happens.....unfortunately it happens too often in this hobby. Seems some folks aren't as polite as others, and ruin the hunting for those who are. Still doesn't diminish the quality of your outing, nor the congrats for your success.

and like they say wherever you find many civil war relics - you're bound to find some nice coins!

What's really amazing is what was going on during that war, & the amount of lives lost. And you have to wonder - did they bury any of
people right there at that site? Course markers can be long gone.

But you must hold some of that stuff in your hands and ask - did this poor soul survive the war or perish in battle? how old was he? etc.

anyways, an interesting story.
