the Japinese current runs up the west coast, I am not sure but I think it runs from north to south. IT is a warm current and a huge mass of water. It holds a lot of heat. The winds are from the west and this heat is transfered to the land. Now I don't mean the water is 80 degrees but just enought ot effect the weather.
Where I live we get lake effect. The lake that effects us the most is Lake Michigan which is a huge lake of dang cold water. The winds from the west, colder than hell from coming across our great plains, pick up moisture from the big lake and dump it as snow on Michigan and places east. Much of our wind also comes from northern ontario, and other Canadian provences that are still very cold.
Mike also #####and enjoys sending his crappy weather this way.
That is best I understand it.
