Big and thick with very little advertising and only two or three tiny one-inch detector ads in the back. Detectors were scarce and field tests and big full page ads were unheard of.

Nice batch of coins they found... :)
I guess back in them "good ole days"
old finds like that were a bit easier than
they are now, with all the extra competition...
Well, not counting changes in the machines.. :/
I conjur up images in my head of what some of
the first detectors must have been like to use,
and it ain't exactly purty...
No ID, or other tricks on those old things I bet.
The discrimination was built into the brain of the
user. :stars:

The first detectors were basically clubs but better than nothing. Many used the old WWII mine detectors which weremonsters to pack around, but everyone back in the old days was looking for buried treasure, loot, caches, etc. Coinshooting was unheard of. The first coinshooters were considered to be sissies and weirdos. A lot has changed. The first metal detector ( a Fisher ) was made entirely of wood and was a sight to see but it worked after a fashion.

Yeah I've got right at 1000 mags going back to the early sixties. There's a lot of interesting stuff in the oldies. Some of it is mine. I wrote for W&ET, Lost Treasure, Treasure Facts, Treasure Cache, Gold & Treasure Hunter, and a couple of others.
