THE UNION Help with ID

This came from an area I have recovered over 1100 relics...mainly clothing fasteners, and buttons. I have never got anything like this before. Wonder if it is war related?

John, I've not done an exacting lexicon study on the phrase "Union," but what I have noticed is at the outbreak of hostilities there was a rush to wave the banner of "Union." This was the very first of what would be a string of "causes" behind the North's marching south.

I've included a picture of an early-style militia hat pin in my book that the mold had been modified for the current climate. In the eagle's shield, rather than stars and a stippled background per normal, is the word "Union." It's an early war piece found in an early 1862 Pa. camp.

I also included a presidential campaign token that bears the phrase "Union & Laws" on the reverse, dated 1861.

Long story short, I would lean toward your piece tending to be early war and part of the "union" fervor the federal troops initially fought under.

Hope this helps.

Richard

I think the date of manufacture will be related to the rivit within the hole. It will be interesting if someone can ID that piece. Most likely it is part of a suspender clasp.
