the ugliest, crusty, thinest Barber you'll ever see....

Merc is pretty ruff also....but that's Podunk for ya. Finally stumble onto a decent coin and it's toasted...lol These are from several hunts around Podunk last week. Did 5 privates recently and no silver but tons of wheats.

Interesting story behind the crusted Barber (189?) which just might pay off later....????? I got the barber on a privately leased chunk of RR property. I'd met the guy at his home which I was led to believe was the old RR Depot from a guy in town. I was under the impression the old Depot had burned done and/or was gone? So I drive out to this place and pull in and the owner is there and he tells me "No, this isn't the old Depot but is in fact the old Hotel and is only 1 of 2 buildings left from the original town" (got turned down on the other one). He is a history buff and proceeds to tell me a bunch of stuff that he knows about the old town. This guy knows his stuff and even chased over to Helena trying to get info on the town, etc. The town was a little boomtown and reportedly had 3-5'000 people at one time but the town burnt down shortly after it got started. It was a jumpoff point to the gold fields in Idaho. Anyways....his property covers much of the old town and he let others in there with tectors but said they gave up because of all the iron. He also said they found no coins but where looking for an "aledged" stash of whiskey that was supposedly buried when the Saloon burnt. He also said nobody has detected around the house (Hotel) that he knows? Back yard of the hotel has huge old trees and no evidence of dirt work? He's a snowbird and took off for Arizona for the winter but told me to come back in the spring and I can hunt it and in the meantime while he's gone I can hunt the RR property he has leased. It was on this RR lease I found the crusty barber so that was a good sign.

We also BS'ed about his plane and I mentioned that I LOVE the little bush planes and he said he'd take me up and let me fly it also. I told him "You misunderstood me....I don't know how to fly but love to fly". He says " Oh I understood you fine but you can still fly my plane".

If nothing else....looks like come spring I'll be hunting the Hotel and get a plane ride outta the deal ta boot...!!!!

Days are numbered here, had snow in the yard already, snow on top the mtns and it's getting cold..........these could be my last coins this season but I might get in a few more?

yep, that Barber sure is toasted. It looks like it was in a fire, I got a few silver coins just like it.

I sure hope your place pans out for you, lol. Who knows, you might find a gold coin at either of those places.

congrat's on the nice coins

That is a great opportunity you got there.
Wow, a jumping off town to the gold fields. That would be an excellent place to detect for gold coins.
People who ventured from far away places to either resettle out West or to mine the gold fields typically carried gold coins to make large purchases for supplies, land, claims, etc. Because gold strike boom towns typically had exorbitant inflated prices, the gold coinage flowed like water in those towns. Granted it might not be the Ca. '49 strike but you never know.
Check out this thread. Tom_in_Ca who has found gold coins out West added a lot of good info to the thread.

Old RR depots are also really great areas to detect. I found one of my best finds in a long gone 1800s depot a couple years ago.

I enjoyed reading about your conversation! Congratulations on the finds and the new spot to hunt! Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks guys....!!!! This could be interesting and never even thought about the boomtown, high prices, possible gold, etc.? Hunting the Hotel is a given and will happen come spring. If indeed the old town had 3,000 people at it's hayday....that would be more than the 2 largest towns in my county COMBINED....lol Now you know why I call my area Podunk. We only have 2 large towns in a county 120mi long and both those towns combined have 2,300 folks so the so-called boomtown supposedly had 700 more folks....lol Folklore also says that one of those guys from the OK Coral deal was even there very briefly but I can't remember which one? The town stood long enough for at least a Post Office, brewery, RR Depot, saloon, school, and the Hotel...that much I do know.

I know a lot of you guys field hunt and this was my first attempt at going "blind" into a flat hayfield not knowing where or how anything laid as far as the old town and I stumbled onto the barber? The guy indicated a different area where the town is supposed to be but I'll have to wait until he returns to snoop there.

Anyways......it was nice to do something different today and enjoy the sunshine (but chilly) and I had a nice view of the snow capped mtns and for the 2.5 hrs I was out in the field I was enjoying the 30+ elk grazing in same field about 1/4 mile away...........

I returned to the RR row and contacted 2 other ranchers bordering the row I have permission on to let them know what I'm doing out there and pump them for info/more property, etc. Got another permission on the bordering row that butts up against my current permission. Nobody seems to know exactly where the old Depot was? Anyways....after bs'ing with these other folks I managed to get in about 2 more hrs tecting before the rain came with nothing to show for it but I keep seeing justbarely enough chunks of old glass and pottery to let me know that people where in the area? Elk were still out in same field again today and the hunters are going nuts because they are on private ground and all they can do is glass them.....lol

You guys that regularly hunt fields have days where you don't get any decent signals? I'm getting a fair amount of iron noise in TTF but the coin sized high tones really haven't been there, but I did get the one coin yesterday?

Great finds even toasty. Sounds like you got a good place to try out when you get a chance. That would be awesome to fly the plane!

Any Barber is a good Barber !

Well after 6 field hunts I think I'll give it up as I only found 8 coins total for approx. 18hrs of hunting the fields. Found the crusty Barber (first coin from the fields), a clad dime, 2 60's memorials, and the 3 wheats & Washington (all 40's), and the truck. Also dug some pocket watch parts, whiskey bottle caps (aluminum), a neat old lock, melted globs of metal, etc, etc. Wasn't too productive but what gets me is I see a fair amount of broken pieces of older glass and china? There is one more field right next to the old school house that I may try and track down the owner? I know the school house has been hunted before and it's not the original one but was built after the old one burnt down with the rest of the town? I stopped by the school house today but nobody home except one mean dog. Sure was handy to have the Ultimate in my stable for covering some ground. I tried hard but I couldn't get into any older stuff once again.........maybe next time. Weather great today (40's) and those elk were in the same field on all my hunts except one.......
