The trouble with ID numbers....

Is that i would have normally just ignored a 16 as being another modern day pull tab and kept on walking.

Lucky I was on the beach this morning where I dig everything and the pull tab turned out to be an 18ct white gold Atlas ring with 3 diamonds from Tiffany & co, worth about $2000 bucks, which is by far my best find yet.

A bit further up the beach I got a solid 42 and was surprised to find a silver quarter dollar a long, long way from home to end up on the beach in Victoria, Australia.

The 4 dollars and 10 cents with 2 fishing sinkers dont really matter at all, considering that the ring is worth more than i paid for my Xterra 70.

But then some people would say the Xterra 70 is priceless all by itself...
Cheers,
Laurie.

I would fall over if I found a diamond ring. Nice!!!!!

WOW nice, that could also buy you some more coils for your X-70! Do you use the stock coil, the round 9" HF Concentric, or the round 10.5" HF DD for the beach? Some people also use the 10x5" HF DD or the round 6" HF DD for the beach depending on the situation. A HF coil is better for finding gold!

Yeah, and my mothers gold ring reads +8, so you have to be careful with those small + numbers.

Hi David,
Just using the stock coil at the moment but the ring was not deep and was up in the dry sand at the top of the beach. I need another detector for the wet sand as the false signals drive me nuts, maybe looking at an Excalibur or cheap PI machine.

Yeah, that's the reason I get so mad at myself when I find that I've fallen in the rut of letting those ID #'s dictate whether I dig or not!! Especially knowing that pulltabs and gold rings ID within the same range! Good thing you didn't keep walking!! Super find!

Hey Lozz,

thats a great find mate...you must be one very happy chap.
...a little while ago I picked up a ring on the beach that bouncing around all over the place.
You never really know unless you dig it, eh.
congratulations.

Gooday Laurie.
Congratulations!!
That is a great ring alright, one has to dig all those low VDI,S to get the jewelry, a good surprise when something good like that ring pops out..
Yes the yankee quarter, I found one a few years back, feels nice to have my whites spectra V3 go off and the 25c icon flash on the screen...its the only coin the detector recognises..LOL!
I now run with icons off!!
Great device the Xterra 70 by all accounts, I have had an explorer XS since they hit the market and the old thing still finds stuff the whites will not!!
By the way UUUMMM you are not hitting the beaches round Mornington peninsula in Victoria are you!!

Happy hunting..

Rob.

Save some $$ and get a HF DD coil you have a good choice of sizes instead of your stock and the 6" & 10.5" DD round are waterproof:confused:

Hi Rob,
No, I am at the pointy end of the state, the part that the weatherman stands in front of every night. I do have the 10.5, 18.75khz coil and would normally use it instead of the concentric, but just did not have time to change it over this morning before i hit the beach. No chance of cashing in the ring, can't get it off my wifes finger now. Oh, and i did check the notice boards for lost and founds but nothing there, looks like finders keepers.
Back to the beach in the morning and i bet i come home with a pocket full of pull tabs and sinkers.

Laurie..
Gotcha!! pointy end, nice up round there..
The beaches here are pretty busy, in the old days I would get out early and be gone again before the holiday makers stirred.
These days I think it not safe to do that sadly, what with the morons hanging around all night and drinking and whatever.
So I will just have to wait till the holidays end I guess, or maybe we will get a nice cold change and that will clear the beach, it has happened:clapping:
Finders keepers on the ring sounds fine to me iff no one has reported it lost, you know the old saying "happy wife happy life".
Sinkers I find a few, not to many shore fishers around here, they mainly crowd out on the jetty.
Hope you find some more treasures.

Happy hunting..

Rob.

So, from reading this thread and what I have discovered myself while learning to use my 705.

It is still "best practice" to dig up everything, in order to ascertain just what it is you are looking at with your detector!

I have been searching in "All Metal", then checking through all the modes to see what they tell me, then I dig it up to see what it is I have found.

My wedding ring and a pull tab ring register the same, some coins and bottle tops I have found register the same!

There are millions of pull tab rings and bottle tops around here, how else can I tell what it is unless I dig it up to see? Well, it's keeping me busy so far!

The most I have learned so far is how to dig efficiently!

I live on an old hydro electric construction site turned into a holiday and tourist resort, pull tabs and bottle tops will never be in short supply! :detecting: :goodnight: :pulltab:

Here's the link to an article I wrote nearly 2 1/2 years ago concerning the TID value of various targets. Although it references the X-30, X-50 and X-70, it applies to the new models as well. Enjoy! HH Randy

Excellent stuff there, just what I have been looking for, sums up my impressions of this metal detecting business and my new X-TERRA-705 exactly!

I am new to this and found it difficult to sort the wood from the trees about detecting, so bit the bullet and bought the 705 for two reasons.

One because it was there and two it looked like it was able to cover the detecting field in both coins/treasure and gold prospecting!

We live on the cusp of the Otago gold fields and also an old hydro electric construction site village which has progressed to a (lakes) holiday and tourist area!

There are also quite a few old schools, historic homesteads and coaching stops around about that have captured my interest.

When the people (holidaymakers) go away, I should have it all to myself again!

It sure is a great learning place, you just get out your detector, turn it on and literally start digging, there are signals everywhere!

I am amazed at some of the stuff I dig up and how far down into the ground they have worked themselves over time

Learning the difference is the big challenge but hey, I have got the time and the inclination and it's "FUN". :detecting: Thanks Digger! Cheers, John.
