hello shawn, the original spanish milled dollar [about the size of a us silver dollar] from the 1600s and up was commonly cut into 8 pieces in colonial america to make small change or"pieces of eight." 4 of these pieces was equal to 50 cents, or 4 bits. 2 of these pieces were equal to 25 cents, or 2 bits, and so on. ive heard of hunters finding these small silver pieces in cw campsites and on beaches,they look like pieces of pie, but ive never found one. which goes to reason that each of these 8 small pieces of silver were worth about 12 and a half cents apiece. crude but effective. good luck and hh,
