the thing about whisper signals...

GRAY GHOST

New member
hi everyone. i've received some questions lately through pm's and on here about the existence of "whisper" signals. i truly did not believe in them until about 10 years ago. as i get older, i've noticed i've slowed my hunts down, bought better equipment, - - headphones, diggers and machines- and learned to listen to what it is the machine is really trying to tell me. half of what we do and consequently, the finds we recover are 100% dependent on three factors - sight, hearing, and judgement. the failure of any one of these three factors during a hunt can make the difference between a poor day [aerating the worms] to a very good day [the happy dance thing.] i get a stong "gut feeling" on a good silver hit or good relic hit. it's those quieter and deeper hits that really get my attention.
a lot of whisper signals are generated just beyond the depth capabilities of your particular machine and coil combination. theyr'e like a half or quarter of an actual signal. theyr'e also quiet and fleeting, but theyr'e there. you will probably never dig a whisper signal without a good set of headphones. most people just don't realize how important a good set of headphones are. i've seen many times where someone would detect a great area without headphones on, and not finding much if anything, only to see someone else go there and find a boatload of stuff with a comparable machine using headphones.
it's almost a phenomenom in our hobby; quite often, the whisper signals i dug were deep old coins on edge or at a skewed angle, small gold, or very deep flatbuttons and relics. and it doesn't matter one bit if the ground is wet or not - of course, damp ground does help a lot - it's very easy to miss a whisper. theyr'e very difficult to pinpoint, which invariably makes the hole bigger and deeper. the whisper signals seem to come through better with low or reduced discrimination, and often are detected only on one side of your swing. but, theyr'e there.
i hope this short post will help you all in some way. i don't completely understand the entire idea of it either, but i do know that whisper signals do exist, contrary to what some people say, and are often really good finds. as always, i welcome your comments, suggestions, and perhaps more info or insight into this odd phenomenom. thanks for reading, and hh,

GRAY GHOST !! I here a lot about whisper signals an low tones, an head phones, i have tryed head phones an the results are the same with them or with out them
I don't here any faint signsls I have a Quick Draw II an it omits three diffrent tones no matter what the object or size the tone is at the same volume, as i think the quick draw amps the sound to
a single volume,, I do get a single tone some times, an can not get a repete constant signal, I don't dig those I think its a false signal ?? or mabe I lifted the coil on end of swing.. I do know for a fact that some times around 10 in. with coins i don't get a good repete signal an i have dug a few of those, an some times it paid off but most of the time the 8 an 10 in. depth readings were junk (soda cans ) LOL

What do you think?

Hey Tabago, When I found the 1828 large cent, I got a tone on one side of the coil. I thought it was junk, but it was a high tone, so I decided to dig it. It would tone on the first swing, but not on the return swing. It turned out to be the large cent about 6 in. deep. What do you think, dig or  no dig? If you don't dig on a one side hit, you may pass on something good.

Ya Waltship I get those some time an i do dig some, an some of time I get lucky. I have this one place i go a (Church picnic ground )
its been there a long time have found a lot of clad coins there about 1 to 3 in. deep, theres a lot of vending (covered Sheds) there thats where I find most of the clad
I get a lot of high tones (silver or clad Tones) an an a lot of single tones that don't have a good repete signal but will repete some times about every 3ed swing but can't pin point them
most are at about 8 to 10 in. I don't dig most of those, as to big of hole, i do know theres got to be elec wires there in some of the area around the sheds do electric wires giv off a high tone?
when the weather brakes I going to dig some of the 10. signals to see whats there,, this place hasbeen there for at least 50 years , so i know theres got to be reel silver coins down there
the tones are loud but just a single tone don't think the quickt draw II will give a faint signal,, ???

I got a tracker 4 and a QD2, neither one gives a faint sig. They give an even tone on everything. It's the same weather it's surface or underground. It's supposed to be 50 tomorrow, so I think I'll get out. I may be retired, but my wife keeps finding things I "could do if I have time". I have to find a better place to hide.:bounty:

Atta boy Waltship! I see things don't change much, my wife always has things for me to do. I've had a Tracker IV, SS2 and a couple other Garrett's that I don't recall the model's but I have never heard a wisper either. I also must add that I have never tried to hear one either.

alright so reading this post let me know if i got this right. Example...I was out at an old ranch/ diary farm site. now a heavily used park. I went off into one of the fields, kept getting certain signals...Hit on first swing then nothing. Most of the time they were very faint signals, could barley hear them. I chose not to dig them and went after only the ones that would repeat. needless to say I got nothing that day but my hubby got 1/2 of something that really old. so theres stuff out there. I dug tons of rusty up iron and scrap. were the signals I was passing "whisper signals"? Should I dig them when I go to the spot next? I couldnt pin point them hardly at all. I chalked them up to false signals. Anyones opinion would definitly help me out thanx..By the way...this is what he found
Any help on this would be of great help as well. Thanx.

Maybe
I don't hear faint sigs because I use headphones all the time.

Whisper signals are more often heard on such detectors as White's machines, or Minelab machines...These machines have either one tone, or varying tone volumes and pitches...these machines give the best whisper signals....The Bounty Hunters give the same volume levels no matter what (at least from what I have heard)...

HH,
