I recently acquired a Conquistador

The first thing that I did was replace it's 9 x 8 coil with a 8 inch brown doughnut coil.

Amen to that!

What pitch is it, low-ish or high-ish? I prefer lower pitch because you get more info in the tones.

You better believe they are a sweet machine, one of the best detectors that I have ever had. Magician, they are a low-ish - medium tone, very pleasant sounding. I wish that I could see how nice your Conquistador

For those that have followed Tabman's and my back and forth on too many detectors, the Conquistador (I have 2) is one of the reasons I have so many detectors. The wife and I especially like them when we attend planted coin hunts. The frequency switch and the sensitivity to nickels plus the light weight make them perfect for those hunts. I put on the 7" concentric coil when attending that type of hunt and it works out very well.

Barberbill,
Do you have very much mineralization in Idaho? I live in southern Utah and own a Compadre and a silver Sabre Umax. I am waiting on a Bandido II Umax to arrive soon I hope. It will be nice to have a detector with manual ground balance to offset the mineralization. My Compadre does alright, but the Silver Sabre looses depth due to the bigger coil and lack of ground balance. I notice back east and the Midwest detectors like the Cibola and Umax detectors without manual ground balance do fine according to posts. Just wondering what kind of depth you get with the conquistador and if you have any problems with mineralization. Thank you.

Yes, in some areas. The soil in the area I'm in is mild and the preset machines work quite well in the parks, fairgrounds and ball fields etc, but a few miles into the mountains you can run into totally different conditions. I'm convinced that a treasure hunter should have at least one machine with manual or true auto ground tracking for the areas it's needed. Personally, I prefer manual ground balance so that the operator can control whether the setting is somewhat positive or negative. I also have a Silver Sabre umax by the way and it's one of my favorite detectors for the mild ground mentioned above.

Thank you for your reply Barberbill. I am glad to hear you have some mild soil. My soil here unfortunately seems to be mainly mineralized, but I will keep looking for some mild ground. HH

I have one that I really like but I dont use it now that I have the Outlaw. I have been planing on selling it but cant quite bring my self to do it. I did notice that I like the cleansweep coil more on the Conq than on the Outlaw.

For what it's worth, the first one I picked up gives about an inch more depth (in air) than the 8X9 spider. About 8" in Disc versus about 9" on a quarter.

Hi everyone, ive just got myself a old Bandido, same box as the u max not the first square one, it has one less dial than my Eldorado u max plastic box one. I believe this has the ED-120 discrim which will be better for my area due to lots of iron on the old roman sites, anyways I digress:tesoro:it came with no manual and not sure about the controls and how and what does the tune knob, toggle do? theres no threshold knob either so is it automatic threshold in all metal for GBing? any tips or advice appreciated folks ,thanks Andy

Here you go: http://www.tesoro.com/info/manuals/older/bandido/bandidomanual.html

THESHOLD CONTROL. This control is placed on the back panel of the detector, since it requires very little usage. Once the control is adjusted to the desired threshold, it will not require frequent resetting.

Well try this: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?17,1178277

The threshold control is not on the faceplate on the Bandido

This is the one that I own, it is the older version before the uMax with the frequency switch under the lower right hand side of the housing. It also came stock with the 8" concentric brown coil too. I really like it. I dug a penny over 10 inches once. I knew it was going to be an old one too.....1976!! But it has scored me some nice CW bullets and silver. I have had it since new and it is one I do not believe I could part with, Tim
