The squirrel lives to see another day....

Went Bass fishing last month and caught this little guy swimming for his life.... The story: As I was fishing on the boat I noticed a Blue Heron flying over. Next thing I know the Blue Heron dropped something from its mouth. It is very early morning and being 100 feet away I had no idea what it could be. All of a sudden the Blue Heron took a nose-dive towards the lake then leveled off and hovered about 10 feet over the lake. The bird continued to circle around the animal in the water and was screaming at the top of its lungs. So I said to myself, "what the hell is wrong with that thing? lol" This bird seemed to be very "irate" and continued to follow the animal swimming in the water. Finally the bird gave up and flew away. Meanwhile back at the bass boat I am ready with my camera to find out what was all the fuss. I could not believe my eyes when I saw this poor thing. His heart must have been pumping 100mph! Almost a Blue Heron's breakfast. I would of never of dreamed a Blue Heron would attack a squirrel. I am still amazed at this critters will to live. He swam the 50 meter race faster then I could of lol Finally he reached a rock at the shoreline, crawled up and just sat there for a minute. (most likely to see if he died lol) After checking his pulse he ran off into the woods. Safe for another day!

If I were that squirrel I would have been celebrating and kissed the shore.:) I like the first photo with the water being that shade of blue. Very nice shot.

Thanks Roscue! The camera is a Canon Powershot S2 IS 5mp. ( I know it is an old camera but still works :) ) I was using the automatic setting and no zoom. I love the camera but do not like using the 12x optical zoom.(36-432mm equiv) See how the squirrel looks in the second photo? He was 45-50 feet away from me ready to jump to the rock. I was probably pretty close to the 48X zoom. I do believe he did kiss that rock lol. Look at his fur in the 1st pic. That Blue Heron chomped him pretty good. When the adrenaline kicks in anything is possible...

Mr. Detector Man.... that makes two of us! I was stunned when I saw this squirrel swimming across the lake. I guess when it came down to sink or swim, he learned how to swim right away lol

That squirrel was really lucky, did you know that a BIG largemouth will eat that squirrel? ........nge

I am glad that you took some pictures of that poor squirrel swimming for it's life. Thanks for sharing with the forum. Kelley (Texas) :)

I would imagine so NGE. I think any big fish would try and catch the squirrels. Lucy squirrel indeed.

Nge - I agree and so would the enormous Northern Pike :) delicious! P.S. I like your signature.
