The Sovereign at a Speed hunt???

At the Buckeye Treasure hunt this weekend I entered the Sovereign in the special comp hunt against some of the best pros and elites in the US.Most important the Sovereign was in this same hunt vs my brother with his F75.I did mention to my brother before the start that at the end of this hunt the winner between us two had bragging rights.Kevin is a great hunter with a great detector before the comp hunt his last two searches in Virginia 8 silver in one day and 7 in just a regular park hunt.OK I know get to the point or results The winner had 24 tokens second place 22 and third 21 these are pros and use specialised detectors for this. Using my Sovereign 16 tokens in this 15 minute hunt and my brother with his F75 11 Tokens. The Sovereign can speed hunt with the little 800 coil LOL if I can just learn to recover my coins without using the pinpointer like the pros.By the way the Sovereign was very impressive in the dime hunts again ahead of the F75 and most people who we parked next to.Until the next comp hunt I have bragging rights over my brother. Hi Ron,

Thanks for posting this information. Not that I am going to go on some speed hunt, but the info is encouraging that even at a quicker
speed(s) (then what I use) that the sovereign can still pick up coins. I make this statement because of what I learned in using the sovereign and what many have instructed me to do( that a slow sweep is neccessary) So I am impressed in knowing that the sovereign is more of a multi-purpose detector then what I previously thought. ( my brother states that I could detect in a 20x20 area all day long lol) Ironic you posted this today as I was reading through Clives book earlier (Again) on page 36 of Finding Gold, Silver and Coins and was reading the difference between the 800 & 1000 BBS / Slimline coil. Especially the speed at which one can move the 800 compared to the 1000.

Congrats on the bragging rights!

1 token per minute! boy I wish I can find silver dimes at my local park at that rate lol

What kind of "specialized detectors" are these pro's using for these type of hunts?

Ron, congratulations and very good to know and ponder. Was it the GT? What settings? It seems like a screwdriver and the right narrow scoop could retrieve a target pretty fast and also leave a no trace dig. How fast are we talking about and in what ground? Any video, pictures? Thanks,
James

Jim.the top detector of choice the older Fisher 1235X for the real comp hunt. The 1236-X2 according to one of the guys didn't work as well with the frequency interference.I have always liked the 1236-X2 but the little 1235X is on my wanted list now after seeing them in action. On one of the seeded dime hunts targets were buried on an average of at least 5 inches the Sovereign was finding targets left behind most where off the field in twenty minutes and I was still able to get a couple extra dimes before time ran out.HH Ron

Wow, the old 1235x was the choice for a seeded hunt? Very interesting choice. They must of been moving at mach speeds across the field with this machine lol It sounded like a real fun time. Thanks for sharing - Jim

James,my first event was a relay hunt.I had the dis off and sensitivity maxed. This was a small area I was first out in our group of 3 to find a token.I got a signal off the swing but another hunter came in and null-ed me out before I could pinpoint my target.I don't understand this strategy but the second time to zero in on my target the same hunter hit my coil with his, at this point kinda of like battling tops.I stayed with the objective to find a token and went for the open area to find another target and recovered the token our second team member was in and I came off the field.First lesson learned it may be better to go with a lower sensitivity setting. But at the first silver hunt the dimes were buried deep 4-5 inches and my sensitivity was at the 11 o clock position my opinion changed again that max sensitivity may work better and hit a target sharper especially for a fast swing.Next event went even better with the maxed sensitivity and it stayed that way even for the rest of the day.Ground dryer than Michigan one pro hunter 3 seconds for target recovery time.I stayed with the Lesch digger I'm not sure what the other used for diggers. My one brother has a short clip of me and Kevin in the comp hunt I'll paste it if it gos on you tube. Thanks Ron

get the soveirign in a F 75 ergonomics and it would win

Gunnar,I the ergonomics is better on the F75.With an inline probe mounted on the F75 I was surprised how much it weighed. With the 800 coil mounted the Sovereign has a good feel .My Sovereign mounted on a straight shaft and the box mounted behind the arm rest even surprised my brother how well balanced and commented the weight wasn't that bad.Again I was pleased how well it worked.Anyway the Sovereign got the job done. Ron, was you using the GT or another sovereign model?

I understand that the Fisher 1235X is used on the speed hunts because it ignores interference from other machines - was therefore wondering if you used the GT and whether you switched frequency bands to avoid interference?

Sounds like a lot of fun - and you have the all important bragging rights...........

BeachBat,I used a XS-2 a GT would have worked about the same.I did use one of the small Cen Tech base meters but very seldom checked, but worked great. All the other hunts entered I had very little interference except when another hunter was a couple feet away or within a coils lenght. Gunnar mentioned ergonomics, which wasn't an issue, I had a Cibola with me but the Sovereign hits much harder on a dime even at 5 inches with a fast swing. The Sovereign was used the entire day.I only hunted one day the Saturday events. The Sovereign is an over looked detector for this type of hunting and could work even better with improved mods such as hip mount or a trigger pinpoint switch on the handle or a better hunter.HH Ron

Elton, this part of the competition hunt wasn't on the the fly-er but for just 10 dollars it was a lot of fun.I entered with my brother Kevin a dare from one of the Ohio hunters, can't remember his name but a great guy(outdoor writer). This post is probably driving Rick nuts but the Sovereign with the 800 coil hits hard and fast on 6 inch targets with precision. To get the most depth out of the Sovereign a slow swing is necessary but a fast swing will still get decent depth.Next years hunt I'll be there with a Sovereign hip mounted with a remote pinpoint switch mounted on the handle.Note for the Ohio hunters you could get in this hunt without entering the other events and this will only cost you ten bucks.Elton I'll see you at next years hunts and maybe some of the other Ohio hunters from this forum. HH Ron
