The sound of coins on edge

Found out something new today

Sometimes when out with my GT I would get a "spitting" sound in pinpoint mode,I never really understood why until today, when I got home I decided to experiment, placing a small coin on edge parallel to my body, I swept over the coin in disc and noticed I got the strongest signal at the outer tip of the stock tornado coil, over the centre of the coil the signal was weaker or more "iffy", in pinpoint mode the signal was strongest at the outer coil tip also,OK this was interesting!

Next I turned 90 degrees and swept over the coin again in disc mode(coin at right angle to my body),the GT gave a very Strong signal all over the coil,in fact the signal was MUCH MUCH stronger than when the coin was parallel to my body !!!,now I swept over the coin in pinpoint mode and got that "spitting" sound, something like "thut thah thut thah",Eureka!,now I knew what the spitting sound meant!

OK to summarise,

The GT with stock coil will hit on coins on edge MUCH MUCH stronger if they are are right angles to your body(looking along edge),in pinpoint mode the coin will be dead centre of the coil but give a "spitting" sound.

If coins on edge are parallel to your body the GT will give a much weaker iffy hit,the only part of the coil that hits hard now is the outer tip of the coil,in pinpoint mode the coin will be found under the outside tip of the coil NOT IN THE CENTRE!

So lets say you are sweeping over a signal in pinpoint and getting a "spitty" sound, you are probably over a coin(or button etc.) on edge,if you turn 90 degrees and pinpoint the coin will be found under the outside tip of the coil when the the signal is strongest.

This just goes to show that after searching a site in one direction you need to search it again at a right angle if you wish to find all the coins on edge.

OK that's my thoughts at the moment, any input about this is appreciated.

other brands of detectors. Coins on edge are very common and many don't know this. There was a time when horse drawn buggies were common in many larger parks and most all yards. Short cut grass was rare. I know this because I also collect antigue photos and I blow them up to see details of my hunt sites. Back in the 1890's to 1920's trash was all over the place and taller grass was the common thing. During wet times buggy wheels and horse hooves drove coins deep and on edge. The taller grasses kept them from being found.

In my coin garden you exspect to find lots of test coins on edge or some angle. This is partly why I can go today to most any "hunted out" site and come home with some oldies.

You're a smart fellow!

:shrug:Damn, I wish I knew what that, thut thah thut thah sounded like. I listened for it the other day and didn't hear it. Maybe there just weren't any coins on edge.
