I don't know if necessary, but I've always followed this advice: After placing the coil on, hold the power button and reset the detector. It will beep after about 6 seconds. Then I would go near a metal pole and see if you don't find that the top of the coil can get closer than the bottom to the pole. Nice info to know. I find that the scan width for fairly shallow targets is from just below the top of the coil to about 1/2" below.

Going on 5 years now with the Ace 250, and never tried that. Thanks for the advice.
