The sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald...............

As most of you folks probably know by now, I always enjoy the boat stories told by Ron on this Forum. Earlier today, I went to Google and started reading about ship wrecks and came across the story about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald which sunk in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975 during a sudden storm of gale force. I found this subject quite interesting and thought that I would post two links about the ship. The first link is a video and the second link is a more detailed history of the ship. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

It is very well known in Canada through Gordon Lightfoot.

Someone found it in a very secluded shore of the lake.. Pretty spooky if you ask me.

I was trying to find out about the boat in a movie named "The perfect thunderstorm." This movie is about a fishing boat that is out to sea when several storms hit at the same time, from different directions. In the end, a large wave hundreds of feet tall causes them to flip over and they sink. I have always wondered if the story in the movie was true. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

That movie "The Perfect Storm" was based on a true story although no one can say for sure what caused the ship Andrea Gale to sink because the crew was lost at sea. It happened in October 1991 but don't hold me to the spelling on the ship.

Discovery channel about it. Seems it's believed that a rogue wave may have caused it to break open!

I took the information you provided and found it. The boat was named Andrea Gail. Evidently the movie was based on a true story. Kelley (Texas) :)

They did a lot of software test and in tank test similar to the water conditions that night on the lake. One theory was the deck hatches were leaking. Pretty sure they located it in one showing. They even had the radio transmissions between it and another boat not to far away, yet it never came around that point. Rough section of water for sure. It don't look much different than the ocean here, just smells different.

on the History Channel, think called The Perfect Storm... Just off the Mass shoreline . They were fishing the Grand Banks area if memory serves me right. They have a big monument there to the guys who have been lost at sea. Dangerous waters out there, especially in the winter, short survival time in the water thats that cold. I know when we were lobstering and long lining for cod we were very aware if you went over board you better get out fast. We ran a line over the side pulling behind us in winter for lobsters and the wheel would full to the left so it would circle. With luck you might be able to grab theline and if someone on board you might get back in.

I know one local lobster, Dick Sawyer and it saved his life. He was badly frost bitten but he made it. His kids all run his boats now but he is still around.
