The simple pleasure of setting goals.

A couple of months ago Leslie started a thread about setting a goal of finding 50 coins on a hunt. Personally I dismissed the concept as impractical, as that particular goal would not be practical in my part of the world. However, I find myself constantly setting all sorts of goals. Usually, when I buy a detector, I like to set a goal of finding the value of the detector as my first goal (typical male compartmentalising type of thinking). Then the next smaller goal of reaching the next $100 dollars. On Sunday afternoon, I caught myself doing it again. Went onto one of my newly opened up sights (for which I have set a 12 month goal of finding $200 on) and set a goal of finding $19 for the afternoon. That was achieved; the last $1.60 being painfully slow at coming; all being small change. Tea was lukewarm that night. That brings the Ace's finds up to an even $200 since the 12 weeks that I have had it, most of which has been found in the last 4 weeks. (I found that a comment here about how much I'd found here the other day was way under, on account that I tend to set goals on cumulative coin value rather than number of coins found.)
Went out hunting a half acre site that I frequent last night. The goal for this site is $200 for the year. Found a bit over $5, which brings the total up to $185 for this site.Got an interesting signal there. It bounced between 1 cent and pull tab. 1 cent is where we find our $2 coins and I usually don't dig it if it bounces down to pull tab. A little voice told me to dig it. When it came up, it was 2 coins. Had a five cent piece sitting exactly over a $2 coin (they're almost the same size). Never done that before.
Anyway, after I got home, I found myself doing it again. Set a goal to find
$500 in total with the Ace before years end. A couple of days ago, I would have considered such a goal impossible. Today, I consider it achievable. Isn't it funny how that goal setting can turn your thinking on it's head!

I do it all the time. Some say its a waste; that its just a hobby and "goals are for work". Ive proven, at least to myself, the opposite. Simply put, setting goals is the best way to achieve outstanding results.
