The silver from today and a question...

Hunted a park today while my Dad hunted a housing complex. We also had my Dad's old boss and his son with us, who were just learning how to MD (this was their 1st time out). They were using a 2500 with the smaller coil. As one would expect , they had some trouble with it. They ended up finding a total of 26 cents ( hey, better than I did on my 1st time out).

His old boss had just retired and decided to take up MDing as a hobby. Of course, my Dad wishes he was retired. Don't worry Dad, only 20 or so more years!!

Here are our finds for today:

Dad: $4.23
11 wheaties
25 cent play money
1944-S merc:bouncy:
1939-D merc:clapping: I actually got to see him dig this one. He knew it was something new as soon as he got the signal. It looks to be in good shape. You can still see its features.
Tilt Amusement token
1941 nickel

Me: $5.10
1950-D Wheatie
20 cent Ireland Euro

Now, here is the question: The 1944-S merc is black without any silver showing. Could it be a counterfeit?? Or do you think it was burnt or something else?

PS: He also found a 1943-S War Nickel yesterday.:hot:

Thanx for looking and HH!!!

I doubt it's a fake, it's just discolored for some reason. It could have been discolored like that when it was lost....Only the shadow knows.

Congrats on the finds. The black dime could be silver oxide. Silver of course doesn't rust, but it does oxidize and silver oxide is black.

Sometimes silver coins just get that black tarnish depending on the ground conditions. It could have been in a fire too. Some of the coins I have found that have been in fires had sort of a bubbled finish. Nice digs. Too cold to hunt here. :(

Don't worry Cwilk, Spring is coming!! Good luck on your next hunt and HH!!!

All the silver coins i find at the beach are black tarnished.

The Merc is oxidized. Pick up a bottle of Tarn-X for cleaning the oxidation off of silver. I have a belt buckle with a Morgan silver dollar in it and I have to clean it ever so often as it oxidizes and either turns brown or black.

Hey, that last silver Merc looks in bad shape. Usually silver will gleam no matter
how long it's been in the soil. I wonder if its a Chinese knock off?

Nice hunt Roscue!! Lots of goodies found!!

I love silver Mercs but they are few and far between up here in north central Canukia. I got a rosie so that's a start. Nice score on the silver buddy.
