Is there a difference in the types of headphones Minelab has used these past 10+ years for the Excalibur? From my last post you saw my Excalibur 2 all tricked out with the GreyGhost head phones as my main set. Let me share with you my experience with the history of headphones. Some of you may remember the old red headphones that the 10" and the 8" seasearch coil models had. The sound was sharpe, clear and distinct. Then in 2001/2 the new Excalibur came our with an "upgraded" headphone as one on the list of improvements.
The first time I place those new blue headphones and ran a quarter across the coil I was abhorred as to what came through these new and improved phones. The familiar sound was no longer something I desired to hear, for now it sounded muffled, dull as if someone had placed their socks in each muff and the sound had to travel through the socks to reach our head. Then the new yellow Koss hit the market. No wonder I think most of the manufactures have learned that building a better metal detector can include the head phones as well with Killer Bees and Grey Ghosts setting the standard. When I purchased the Excal 2 I told the store owner to send it in the Minelab for the Grey Ghost modification. Now the modification costs about $70. $110 for me because that included shipping both ways and the Yellow head phones I had them place a connector on them for back up. After a month of waiting I received the unit and man I'm glad I had the modification done! Why? Simple. First let me tell you the new and improved Koss headphones are no different than the blue sock stuffed 2001 headphones as far as the quality of sound is concerned, muffled. Then I connected the Grey Ghost phones. Now I was told they were better, in what way? Hearing fainter sounds was one persons experience another said a better quality of sound. So I've got them connected and I fire up the Excal and reaching into my pocket I grab a quarter and run it across the 10" coil. Bling, bling, WOW!!!!!!!!! The sound is just like the old RED headphones Excalibur's from the late 1990's. What a great thing. I invite every Excalibur owner to make the switch IF you value the days when the Excalibur sounded sharp, distinct and clear.
