The Round Tesoro 10.5 Concentric uMax Coil

Tfor2

New member
Here I am once again answering questions nobody is asking :goodnight:

Due to discovering that the 10.5 inch concentric coil is a hot number in the UK (mostly with those using the older Tesoro uMax machines), I decided to see if one could still buy these coils.

After months of chasing my tail (so to speak), I finally chatted with someone who really knows.

I called Tesoro a couple of times and the last time (today) I chatted with Vince.

Okay, here's the scoop (still awake?).

Tesoro once made a 10 1/2 inch round donut coil for land uMax machines. The new 12x10 concentric coil took it's place and they no longer make the 10.5 concentric for uMax land machines.

BUT (this is where it gets interesting), some dealers still have these old 10.5 inch coils in stock.

I asked Vince if the plugs fit today's uMax land machines. He said "yes." Now here's the catch, the number on the 10.5 inch coil that works on all uMax land machines is this: 10.5RC-LW

If the coil number has a --5 at the end it's a water coil and will NOT WORK on land machines.

The moral is, if you really want to know, ask those who know (or words to that affect).

As you were. P.S. I just ordered a 10.5 and I'll let you all know how it works.

Oh, I almost forgot. I asked Vince if the new 12x10 is a better coil than the old 10.5 and he said: "It covers more area and it's sexier."

I've have the 10.5 inch umax coil you're talking about. I've used it when I wanted more coverage and it worked fine, but I've never really tried it in a situation to check its maximum depth. I'm thinking it would give an inch or two more on coin sized targets and fair bit more on larger targets. For most of the hunting I do, I find I prefer to swing the 8" and smaller coils due to trash, target separation, and the weight at the end of the pole.

Thanks Bill,

I ordered one through TC metal detectors. He says his supplier has them in stock.

Due to the 8" coil being so good and this coil is built on the same principle I just had to try it. I know over in the UK those who use the older Sabres just love these white donut coils.

It took me a long time to track them down though. All the attention is on the 12x10 now. Many dealers have just forgotten about the 10.5 uMax.

I've used several of the 12x10 concentric coils on my Silver Sabres and uMax machines and it did great. However I'm thinking this 10.5 will do just as well due to the round shape being the preferred shape for depth. You can read about this on the Nexus company site.

The 12x10 is spoked and likes to get caught in brush. The old 10.5 is lower cost and has that hole in the middle I really like for pinpointing targets.

I plan to go back and forth between the stock 8" and the 10.5. But like you say the 10.5 will be deeper and I'm betting about 2 to 2 1/2 inches deeper than the stock 8 inch. I know some spots where that extra 2 inches means a lot.

Hey Tfor2-----Did you get this coil & test it?---If so, what's the results & on which detectors? --------Del

Interested in hearing how these 2 coils compare (10X12 & 10.5 concentric on the umax).----All things equal (as much as possible).-----Also, what is the weight on these 2 coils (weight difference)?------Del

Well I wasn't able to get the 10.5 uMax concentric. The dealer I ordered it through told me he had it but it turns out he uses a "drop shipper" and his "drop shipper" didn't have it in stock.

I knew before I ordered the 10.5 uMax coil that Tesoro had ceased making it some time ago in favor of the 12x10 concentric. But, several dealers have it listed on their web sites as IN STOCK.

Many dealers update their detector business web sites about once every 3-50 years. So, don't believe everything you read and see on detector dealer sites.

So, my order was canceled after waiting for nearly 3 weeks, making 3 long-distance phone calls, several emails, and constantly being told "you'll have it soon."

But I've been into this hobby since the BFO days so I've seen tons of this over the years from businesses to individuals. I guess when a deal goes smoothly I'm shocked.

If you can locate a dealer who really really really has a 10.5 uMax (not the Sand Shark 10.5) coil--get it and let us all know what you think.

Tfor2------That's too bad about that coil.---Maybe you can still find a used one in excellent condition.----I know what you mean about this shipping business.---I bought my first detector in 1974 or '75 & have had some of that type of thing happen to me to (on various M.D.ing items).--------Regards, Del

I've seen them, and actually purchased mine, on Ebay. They show up from time to time. You might post a "wanted" on the accessory sale forum as well.
