The River That Gives Up Gold Gave A Little Loot Today

Got out for a Hunt this afternoon. I worked some trails along the river. The loot lords wouldn't give up very much loot today. But it's only a hobby, and hobbies are meant to be enjoyed, which I did :)

Here is a pic of the gold that I pulled out of the river several years back....two and a half summers worth got me about 1 1/2 onces of flour gold....

nice, can I have some pay dirt???? Great job!!!

Good to see you back out there with your trusty GTI 2500!!!!!

Nice finds, the gold I mean:super: What method did you use to get it?

A combination of a sluice box and a rocker, The rocker had corduroy carpet in it to help catch the black sands. The sluice box has 1/8" x 1/8" x 14" riffles (rubber matting) to help catch the black sand with the flour gold. I built a recirculating water pump system using again the same rubber matting, 4 inches wide and 5 feet long, in which I fed teaspoons of black sand. The small 5 foot miniature sluice washes away the black sands, leaving mostly the gold behinds, when the right angle and rate of flow was set up. I spent the summer gathering the black sands, and the winter separating the gold in the basement. I ended up with a 5 gallon bucket nearly full of black sand each fall. The remaining black sand (gold removed) was then put in my wife's flower garden, which (supposedly) gave brighter colors to her flowers.

WE HAD A SPRING SNOW STORM LAST WEEK WHICH PUT THE BRAKES ON HUNTING FOR A FEW DAYS.... BUT IT IS JUST ABOUT GONE. I used a sluice box and rocker to get that gold. I figure it would take 100 years to pan that much from here.

And at one point today, I was using a detector in each arm, as the bushes and wide open areas were plenty.

 thanks!!!

John. If you were to sell that gold how much could you get for it? Say you had an ounce of "flour" gold. Do they discount the price any because of the form it's in?

Good story.

Chris

That is great. Good idea of waiting till winter to separate it all, but I don't think I would be that patient. I'll have to see how well I was doing. I don't recall the price now, but you can sell magnetite. It looks like your gold came the hard way. It all looks very fine. Are there many nuggets found there? Was all that gold local? My dad made a nugget ring from his gold. He had it made on top of his father's wedding ring.

My sister lives near the Reed mine in NC. I do all my prospecting in that area. The first piece of gold found at that site weighs 17 lbs. Later they found a 28 lbs. piece of gold. Can you imagine some one with a detector saying, it is just a large piece of junk and not dig it. I have a place I want to prospect that is a two mile hike through the forest. There are no roads to it and there were three mines in the area, with lots of tailings.

I use to work at a place that had a great sheet metal shop. When things got slow, the boss told us to look busy. He would tell us to go make something. One time I made a stainless steel tool box. Another time I made a stainless steel sluice. I made it 4 ft. long and had a good time welding it all together. There was no hurry and I crafted it the way I wanted. I use my dad's Keen as my basic pattern.

No nuggetts....just flour gold. No source either.....the flour gold is consistent for about 100 miles up stream then stops. man we have a lot in common......prospecting, detecting, gifted child. unreal :)
