For those who haven't noticed, I basically used some of Uncle Willy's exact words that he used in his AT Pro post. I was kind of being funny, but I felt the wording is certainly appropriate for the Pro-Pointer. It has improved my detecting results and enjoyment more than any other detector or detecting equipment I've used. And I truly feel that it is significantly more effective than any other pinpointer I've used.
But despite the duplicate wording, I kind of doubt this thread will get over 5,000 hits in less than three weeks!
I'll give the guy in the above video props for an exciting and great find
, but two thumbs down for the crater
.
Even on a deep target in an area where nobody cares, that's overkill and he should work on his pinpointing skills. Especially if he's going to post a video for the whole world to see.
I'm very familiar with the Pistol Probe. I've had one for the better part of two years and I actually use it along with the Pro-Pointer. On average, once or twice a hunt I'll call on the Pistol Probe's extra depth when I can't locate the target quickly with the Pro-Pointer.
The Pistol Probe absolutely has more depth, but massive depth is not important in most pinpointing situations. And the Pistol Probe simply doesn't work as well for most pinpointing as the Pro-Pointer.
The Pro-Pointer is compact, convenient and durable. And most importantly the signal is graduated, so it gets more solid as you get closer to the target.
The Pistol Probe is bulky, awkward and not particularly sturdy. It looks like a gun from a distance (which admittedly can be a plus in some areas) and it is a lot more temperamental in use and with the control knobs and the fragile little door that folds back to access them.
A couple months ago my Pistol Probe cracked right where the barrel comes into the body. I called Detector Pro and they said there was nothing they could do except maybe try to glue it. Fortunately the small wires were unbroken, so I glued it, surrounded it with Goop automotive sealant and after it dried surrounded it with gaffers tape. It's held so far, but I know it's only a matter of time even though I'm babying it. When it does go, I'll miss it but I don't know that I can justify $170 for a new one.
I'm kind of thinking the guy in the video posted above has an agenda in pushing the Pistol Probe. It's very rare that someone underestimates depth with any detecting equipment and this guy definitely did when he dismissively said "about an inch" for the Pro-Pointer. I don't exaggerate depth and I can tell you that the Pro-Pointer gets about two inches on a coin. Unless you detune it, you won't get less than 1 1/2" on a coin.
I'm not knocking the Pistol Probe. It compliments my Pro-Pointer nicely. But in an either-or situation, I would always go with the
Pro-Pointer. And I'm pretty sure that most dirt fishers who have used both would say the same thing.
