Well the story goes like this.My husband and i went detecting the other day,as usual we both went our own way to detect alone. From a distance i saw my husband waving so i made my way towards him. As i approached him about about 6 meters away he said his Explorer wasn't working, it was as dead as a door nail so we just assumed it was the battery, however there was power to switch back and forth which in itself was strange. I had been experiencing the popping in my headphones intermittent as i said the other day,i just thought it was a clean beach because every now and then i got a signal otherwise it was very quiet, low and behold within two seconds my Excalibur went dead too??? not a sound! i thought the battery was empty too because we did have a power cut as we were loading.
We went home and my husband discovered a loose screw in the shaft of his Explorer once it was tightened he had a great reception so his was fixed. Then it was about my Excalibur (very new) no signals at all but when he twisted the cable that goes from the pod to the battery it worked intermittent so my head phones were not at fault at all they were literally telling me things were working on and off contact and no contact.
My husband found the area in the cable that was defect it was 15 mm from the main pod,so he slit the insulation around that area found the broken wire, inserted an extra piece of wire as it had created empty space somehow, then he soldered the tiny piece in place and closed the insulation off by melting another piece of insulation rubber with his soldering iron so all is sealed and fixed. He said it is a bad piece of wire and can happen again minelab should know that they have a bad batch of cables from the firm because on that particular wire there is no movement and we are talking a new machine. I am so happy i didn't have to send it for repair because we are leaving shortly for another holiday with detector of course.
So anyone experiencing problems with the ear phones it may not necessarily be the headphone but bad cables.
Cheers Maureen
