The real thing or not?

Ma and I had some exciting finds today but here's the problem:

We know that the confederate defenses of Williamsport during the retreat from Gettysburg were precisely in the location we were hunting (I have a map that was generated from Meade's official report showing Lee's defensive line on July 11th- 13th)

BUT...

We also know that a reenactment occured in this very spot a few years ago.

So, we're naturally wondering if these things belonged to reenactors or the real McCoys.

Here's a front and back view of a confederate (I hope) infantry button. The back appears to be iron and it is 23mm in diameter

Ma found this. It appears to be some kind of hat decoraton - Irish maybe???

Real or not???
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pa Diggins

Definitely the real thing. That statement is not just based on the condition of the brass face. Every one of the "repro" two-piece Confederate I buttons had a brass back - never an iron one. (And I was a Confederate re-enactor, for manymany years.)

So, congrats on your find - it's the McCoy!

isn't it the strangest thing pa our two buttons were no more than 20 feet from each other..........glad one of us got the real one......still had a blast anyhow......
