the real essentials

GRAY GHOST

New member
hello everyone, another year has gone from us now, and i have some thoughts on detecting id like to share. numero uno, is having an understanding wife who understands my detecting addiction. she knows its a good problem to have. 2. hot batteries - maybe i really should invest in energizer! i sure do go thru a lot of em. 3. start separating and recycling all the junk ive found in the form of 23 5 gallon buckets over the years - the reason i havent done it yet is i am afraid it will drive down scrap metal prices around the world... pure pandemonium would result! 4. the ever present necessity of doing my homework/research ughhhh but it sure does pay off... 5. the possibility of devoting an entire day to get permission to hunt as many acres as i can get for the year...the closer to the house the better! but, just some thoughts on the essentials...thanks for reading and hh oh yeah - i was kidding about the 23 buckets of junk-but its darn close!!!

hey grey ghost,

thought id let you know i followed your advise and purchased that 10" magnum coil for my bh202. i know it probly wont make much of a differance at the beach but im hoping to hit the lottery soon and get an ecal for that :) im starting to feel the pain of your "real essentials", ive only been on a hand full of hunts and really have nothing to show for it but i like the challenge. thanks again for the advice! -new202user:biggrin:

The 10" coil WILL make a definate difference at the beach, you'll get coin sized targets approx 20 to 25% deeper than the 8" coil. I've proven this by testing 2 detectors one with the 10" and one with the 8". The only down side, you'll be digging a lot deeper for the soft drink tins. I used to walk away from broad sounding signals because I dug so many deep tins, I don't any more. I have found a few "nests" of coins that sounded like deep tins and ended up being between $5 and $10 and in one case $20 worth of coins from the same hole. HH regards Nugget:detecting:

Just a quick note to say the 4inch coil can benift you on the tot lots and park areas with lots of trash.........HappyHunting!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonder who had $20 of change in their pockets...either that, or something pushed or washed them all to that spot...The 10" coil will go about 2-3 inches deeper than the 8"..the 4" looses about 1-2 inches. The 10" is great for low trash areas when you want to cover a LOT of ground quickly...The 4" is good if the 8" is giving you a LOT of trash signals, or broken signals...Especially around metal objects in tot lots, and those pesky picnic areas where the folks toss the cans and pull tabs...

I am a newbie here and was wondering why you say the 4 inch coil is good for trashy areas, tot lots, parks? I have the 8 inch coil on my 202 and am wondering if I buy the 4" and the 10" coils, how will they help my hunting? I am doing very well at finding pull tabs, foil packets, buried cans, etc...At the park this morning found a cool marble and a dime plus a used tennis ball I gave to my dog. I think this forum is better than another one I was reading through, better for us newbies!

joanincreek,

the 8" coil works well and not nowing anybetter i just assumed it was ok. after grey ghost suggested the 10"magnum coil i found it on ebay for $40 and bought it. (also saw it on amazon) there was almost no info on any of the online sites about it and everyone said the same thing. when i recieved it the box only said what i read online so i wasnt too sure. when i got a chance to use it i went and search old places i was already at and not only found more stuff but stuff that was deeper (2-3" average). although most everything i found was junk i was amazed. in one place i found a wheat penny 10" down with it.

i do not own the 4" coil but i have learned that if its recommended on this site its gotta be good. ive also bought a set of bounty hunter head phones aswell and they are working out well for me.alot of what i have learned has been from this site. and im grateful.

Hear, hear, I too am learning a ton from these wonderful people! Thanks again to all of you!

I will try to sum it up on the 4" coil...it has a smaller footprint...That is it sees a smaller slice of the ground than the 8" standard coil...for this reason, it's signal is concentrated into a smaller area...it gets in between the trash to find the good targets....think of it as you need to put a 4" ball in a 4" hole...the 8" ball just won't fit....it is less sensitive to the sides of the coil, that makes it good around metal poles and such that are found in tot lots....it takes longer to cover the same area, but if there are a ton of cans and tabs in the area, the 4" will find the good stuff amongst it all...

the 4 in. coil is great in high trash/high iron areas.the standard 8 in. coil is good for all around hunting and larger sweeps/depth [you know, the one that got you hooked to begin with] the 10 in. coil is great for fields/woods and increased depth. its a beast with fresh batteries. been a lot of debate about rechargeable batteries-im not convinced theyre much good. i go to home depot and buy the 6 pack of energizers for 9 bucks...i KNOW my machine wont die in the middle of a hunt. equip yourself with a good set of headphones and keep them close. the keys to a successful hunt are this...hot batteries-research-good earphones-a good sweep pattern-a good trowel/shovel-patience-focus on your objectives-willingness to try new areas. the failure of any one of the aforementioned keys can make the difference between finding something vs. nothing. detect anywhere and everywhere you can. youd be surprised whats in the ground that you walk over all day long and dont think about it. never discount any area because of new buildings or too many new signs. throw obvious trash away-no room in the pouch for that. always keep stuff you find that you cant identify...someone on here will know what it is. youd be surprised what people lose to the ground. theres plenty of coins and relics in the ground for everybody. im 25+ yrs in this hobby, and have respect for the people who post on this website-a wealth of info here. ive never seen a hunted out site-so dont listen to them when they tell you that-they probably want it for themselves.theres a hobby to be done...and yourre the one to do it!!! any questions feel free to ask-we got plenty of talent and experienced people here...happy hunting, gray ghost

Well said Gray Ghost, your experience and willingness to help others puts you in great stead. Keep up the good work mate! Live your dreams! HH Nugget.:detecting:

Gray Ghost this was a great post! After researching for hours on line, I took my the BH 202 and new found info out this morning to a playground I did once before. This time though I slowed down, concentrated. I turned up the volumn on my headphones and paid attention. Patience is definately key, listening to the machine's beeps and not ignoring the signals because it's probably 'just a penny'. Today I found 1.55 in coins on the same tot lot I did two weeks ago and came up with pull tabs. Okay so it's not big bucks but still, using all the info you and others have shared on this forum, I'm on my way to finding things I was not finding before. Also, the detector knows! Was in wood chips and mulch, sifting and digging, could not find that coin. But it was there, just black and blended in with the dirt, damp wood chips, shredded mulch and sand.

Thanks everyone for all your tips, it has clarified things and helped me enjoy my new found hobby much more!

I went out Yesterday and was hunting a local park...Lewis Park in Syracuse, NY on the West side. it is known for it's mixed racial society, and low income housing areas...Not a pretty place to be if your not a local and know how to deal with the folks from the area. As I was hunting, a few older women were sitting on the swings and slides...The area is also know for prostitution...lol...Well, I am hunting when I see one of these ladies walk over to my bag I keep my gear in and start to bend down next to it...I came over and asked here if I could help her, and she said she lost something and thought I might have picked it up...I asked her to describe the item lost, and she said it was a cell phone...when I asked her the brand, she hesitated a minute, and said a Motorola. I just happen to own a Motorola...a real cheap one...not even a flip phone...I asked her to describe the phone, and she commenced to tell me it was a camera phone, internet ready, ect....Well, I told her I would empty my bag, pockets, and such and if she found her phone, she was welcome to it...I emptied out everything on me, and when she saw my phone, she says "There it is, you took it!"...I said...How long was it missing? She said I just lost it in the last hour...I said, well, I have been here for about 45 minutes, would that give me time to reprogram your phone...can you tell me your phone number, the date your airtime is due??? She just stammered, and I said...My phone number is ###-####, and my air time is due on Jan 15...she then says.."Well, I guess it is not my phone after all..." At this point, all the others are watching us...I go back to hunting, and she slinks away all red faced...lol...This was a first, but I put it out here just to show what some folks will do to try to get your stuff...

Happy Hunting,

BH-LandStar

I lock all gear I'm not using in the boot, out of sight out of mind. I also try to keep one eye on the vehicle now, as someone tried to break in about 3 or 4 trips ago. They tried to get in the front passenger door slightly damaging the lock. Stupid! if they had tried the doors first they would have found that the passenger side rear door does'nt even lock Ha Ha. Question what does LOL mean, I thought it was Lots of luck? LIVE YOUR DREAMS! :detecting:HH regards Nugget.
