The question still remains Xterra coils wich would be all around best to leave on

well the 3 frequencys are good but if one must leave on just one coil and choose just one coil. Hmm wonder wich is best 7.5klhz concentric 3klhz concentric or 18.75klhz concentric. Of corse im speaking for coins and jewlry. Also im only speaking of 9inch concentric minelab coils.

I'm convinced the 3 kHz is better for silver and copper coins. And I'm convinced the 18.75 is best for gold jewelry. As I've said many time before, all three will detect anything metal. But the 3 kHz gives me a distinct audio response on deeply buried iron. And the 18.75 is most sensitive to small gold jewerly. So if I had to chose one of those three you mentioned for both coins and jewelry, I'd strike a compromise and opt for the 7.5 kHz. JMHO HH Randy

Good luck getting a good consensus I have two coils and swap regularly. That is why I bought the Xterra. All Xterra coils are Minelab, internal chips you know (in the coil).

well I have only took my 3khz off one time since I owned it and it was to use my 6" coil in a trashy yard, other than that, my 3khz stays on 100% of the time, but I am mainly after old coins and relics

My stock coil hangs on the wall.......the 10.5 DD 7.5 stays on my Xterra 70.............MO

If I had to leave one on all the time it would be the 10.5 DD 7.5kHz coil. It depends on the type of soil and what you are hunting for. With the x-70 I have five coils to choose from. That's why I chose the X-70 when looking to purchase a detector.

I find coil choice confusing as well....I only have the stock coil that came with the X-70, and have done well with it...but I am going on a big CW hunt, and would like to know if the 10.5 would be better for relics...any and all help appreciated!

If I had to leave just one coil on I'd be torn between the 7.5kHz 9" concentric and the 7.5 kHz 6" concentric... the 9" gives better depth, but the 6" gives better separation and pretty good depth..I'm talking about hunting for coins and jewellery. I've found both to be very good all-round coils. Sapper.

While I am not a relic hunter, I have read a few posts here and the majority of relic hunters seem to prefer the 10.5 MF 7.5kHz DD. Though not as sensitive to low conductors as an HF coil would be, the MF coils will go deeper as the soil becomes more mineralized. The rules of thumb for coils are:

1. The lower the frequency i.e. 3kHz, the less affected by ground minerals and deeper detection of copper & silver which are considered high conductivity metals. Those high conductors will allow electrical current to flow with the least amount of resistance, and that is why copper for the most part is used for electrical wiring.

2. The higher the frequency i.e. 18kHz, the more affected by ground minerals and more sensitive to low conductors like gold & lead. Another aspect of the higher frequency is greater sensitivity to smaller objects.

The MF 7.5kHz coils are a middle of the road choice that is a combination of the above tendencies with their strengths & weaknesses. DON'T get caught up in absolutes! All of the coils will find both low & high conductors with the difference usually being a couple of inches at depth. This review with it's air & depth tests is a good primer on the frequency effects.

The one that has worked best for you. Of course so far I only have 2 and I change out quite frequently. Changing out only takes a miniute or two so I don't mind.

i have found some mercs,Indians, with the doubled 7.5Hz but tried yesterday the 9in 3Hz i was thinking i would find more silver deeper but to no avail.i got alto of mixed id's so i had to turn down the sens. for it to balance out also i found to clads with the 3hz coil i was thinking of going back to the 7.5 dd anyone have similar issues with the 3 Hz coil?

What numbers are on the display when you ground balance each coil? If you have to turn down the Sensitivity with the concentric, I'd suspect you have some highly mineralized soils. If that is the case, a DD coil wil perform better than a comparibly sized concentric. JMHO HH Randy

What mode and settings do you typically start out with at a site? How do you adjust when you get into heavy iron?

Just curious because I have noted quite a few people having probs getting satisfactory results with the LF coil (you and Digger excepted  )

Thanks
Tom

the 3khz outperforms the 10.5 DD and the 9" 7.5 khz in my soil on finding silver and copper coins. But every area is different, I will just stick to what works in MY AREA

Silvereagle,

I had trouble using the 3 kHz even after trying the multiple tones like Digger recommends. It seemed like a barrage of tones with no repeats of any one tone (every tone different) and I could not make heads or tails of it. I think the problem was that my sites exceeded Digger's "6 targets per sweep" rule, where he has said that the 9" 3 kHz coil in multiple tones works great for him where there are fewer than 6 targets per sweep, but that the 6" 18.75 kHz DD works better for him where there is more than 6 targets reporting per sweep, which is why there are a number of us that would like Minelab to give us a 6" DD in 3 kHz.

I think the 7.5 kHz is the best all-round concentric coil, and I'd probably agree with anyone who said it was the best all-round coil... I found gold rings with all but the 3 kHz concentric, but....give me time.....
