The problem with having......

more than one rooster in a pen is that......one of them always loses. I have a banty rooster in with 2 Leghorns. Ive had Scotty for maybe 3 yrs, Alphalfa was one I aqquired in a chicken trade, and well, yall remember when Cotton-top was born.
Last week, Scotty was chasin Alphalfa around who was chasin Cotton-top when all of a sudden, he stopped and sort of hunkered down. He was carrying his right foot so I decided to put him in a smaller pen so that the others wouldnt pick on him. Chickens have cannibalistic charateristics born into them. When they realize another is hurt, they start in on him pecking and spuring.
At first, I thought Scotty was going to be okay because he would eat and drink even though he wouldnt walk on it. Last Friday, I heard Scotty crow for the last time as if just to say, "Im still the man!", He was very majestic and though he had spurs 3 inches long, he didnt ever look for trouble.
Mother nature has a way to take care of things. Its just too bad I didnt have the new 30x30 chicken pen finished yet or he might still be alive. I hope Alphalfa learned a little from Scotty because now, he is the "man".
I layed him to rest on Chicken Hill this evening after dark. He'll be missed.

He could do some serious business with those spurs!
Glad you had him as long as you did. At least he didn't get eaten by some possum or dog.
Alphalfa will willingly take the helm now! <><
