The plastic nut on the SEF coils.

JASONSPAZ1

New member
Some SEF advertisments say the sef coils are water resistant. Some people say they are water proof. Which is it? The plastic nut on the coil itself can easily be hand loosened. Would it be wise to put some of that white stuff that plumers use on the thread of copper pipes.
( what is the name of that white stuff?)
I want to shallow water hunt with my GT with the sef coil.

Thanks in advance
Jason

Thread seal tape

If you are talking about the cable strain relief nut, teflon tape won't help seal the plastic threads, Teflon tape is for metal pipe threads that don't generally seal well when tightened. Plastic is ductile and will conform to different shapes so its threads will seal against each other nicely. Teflon tape would be redundant.

The coil is generally rendered waterproof by sealing the coil and components in epoxy resin. The outside shell is simply a coil mold and protective barrier against the elements.

Agree with you.

Jason the nut your talking about is just to hold the strain relief in place. they ship the SEF coils with the strain relief unscrewed so they can lay the cable flatter safely. screw it down hand tight and your done. coil is waterproofed as ism stated.

The nut on my 15x12 SEF was snapped right off in the box had to go back. The second one was pulled out and would not screw back in as it fell out each hunt! When out all the inners are showing and
any water reaching that location would surely ruin the coin in a minute. That coil went back as well! The third coil they send had similar problems with that connection, they said to ship it bacjk as well,
I was about 3 months into the process and decided just to epoxy it in place that was two years ago!I have had no problems since.I will not buy a SEF in the future, after paying that much for a coil and having
poor quilty control tells me to stay clear. JMHO

Steve - Both of my SEF coils work fine with no issues, but I have heard of others with defects. I must have been lucky.......so far.

Ya Matt on all mine you could see the windings in a gaping hole! All is good now I love that it will float on the sand (scrub) this way you don't have to hold it for 6 hrs!

The nut on my SEFs was loose from the factory. I put some rubber cement on the threads to help further seal it, hand tightened down, then used a wrench to snug it just a bit more. Careful, don't over tighten it.
