The only thing I don't want to dig is Iron.

I have the SE after using White's for a few years. I like to dig everything except iron. I am looking in old parks and want to find old coins, jewlery, some civil war time items. What is better for this ferrous or conduct? Is it good to use the iron reject screen on a minimal setting, if I don't want to miss stuff?

I understand how you feel.

I can tell you from experience though...some of the best coins are still hiding in the ground masked by trash or iron. They aren't there because they're too deep...they're there because they are masked.

As long as you stick with signals that repeat 100% of the way as you circle the target...you shouldn't dig hardly any iron.

I don't have any experience with ferrous sounds or all metal...but I'm sure there lots of people who can help you if you go that route.

Personally...my preference is conductive sounds with some iron mask. If I dig any iron...it's my choice and I've decided to chase a more iffy hit.

Take care and good luck

I the SE like more conventional detectors where the more discrimination, the less depth? Also what settings do I use to detect a quarter and an iron nail in the same hand trick that I see on youtube? I don't mind digging iron, but want to cut out enough.

The SE is capable of finding an 8" silver dime directly out of the box in the factory preset mode with no problem.

I don't watch many videos and there are no tricks to learning the SE...only hours and hours in the field digging targets.

There are tons of settings for the SE that will allow you to find a coin with iron or trash in the hole.

You need to train your ears first though to the sounds you like...and you will still dig some nails...but the iron you dig will greatly diminish.

Using ferrous and no discrimination will work great, I use it for relic hunting any day.

Beware much trash will be dug, you can still confront display for info! :detecting:

Any amount of iron mask will greatly reduce signals from nails. The main thing to grasp is how much iron chirps are you willing to accept. I use -15 to -13 IM (XS)(conduct sounds) and can detect any place but I have put in the time to learn the Explorer's language,
that is the key to using it.
I would think if you used Bryce's IM settings, you can cut out most nail falses and learn to deal with the ones that do break thru.
More IM doesn't necessarily cut down on depth but it does affect those iffy signals that could be a good find.......
Quarter and nail? My guess is you will get a good signal across the narrow of the nail and maybe not a very good signal sweeping across the length of the nail, just some of my brief thoughts.

If you are looking for something close to whites ... then yes id say hunt in Ferr. Also, if i remember correctly threshold TONE to say 5. Myself, i have nails disc and modified the area to be a little bigger. But, its what you get used to. The Explorer is pretty darn tollerable with its settings. Because of wrap around id say its going to be hard to not find nails with any detector if you are digging targets in the 8" range.

I thought id add something elce.... a friend of mine said it best in Andy's book... its a matter of deminished return. If you want to take the time to dig those iffy signals and obviously nails until you get more experience then you will pick up some of those old coins described by say Bryce.

I know exactly how you feel. I just got an Explorer II, I have read Andy's book from cover to cover. I went out today and swung for three hours at an 1860's farm house. I found plenty of iron farm implement pieces, bridle rings, brass rings etc. I just know there has to be coins somewhere in all this mess, but I could not pull one in , know matter how hard I tried. Oh yeah I forgot to add I dug about twenty old square nails. I know it will come with time, but it is discouraging.
