The oldest coin I found this year!

John 'n' W.Va

The one I found Saturday is from the 1700's. It will be a while before I find one older then that.
I went to MD the dirt roads in Lake Helen at 7 am. today. It is about a 15 minute drive from where I live. I am going to be MDing there for a long while.

One guy came out to talk to me. He told me his neighbor has a MDer and could not find anything in their yards. He told me to try the house down the street. He said it has been empty for a long time. I told him I don't care to trespass. I will stay on the public right of way.

I dig most of my hits. You never know.

Looks like it came off a trophy.

This is heavy and about the size of a quarter. The back of it has some kind of black tar on it. I have no guess on what it is.

Nice finds, and you better find the owner to get permission to hunt that old house, or else I am coming down during my kids spring break and get permission to hunt it myself . That house must have some great oldies in the grass. :)

I am not afraid of a snow pirate. You have no power down here. YOU WILL MELT!
I really have more places to hunt, then I have time. I have done a lot of research and I have a lot of thing in the works. New things are always coming up. I go where I feel like going that day. Sometimes it is not always profitable, like the beach right now. It sure is a nice trip on a warm day. I love that morning sun rise. That is one of the better sides of Fl. that I am going to miss. I might be out of here by spring break.
Orlando is second in the nation for hotel rooms. The big resorts with the high rates do all the advertising. There are a lot of hotels for under $50 a night. Unless there is a really big event, I would come to Orlando first, then find a hotel room. They have rooms in discount magazines. Travelers radio even has high class resorts rates posted daily as low as $39 a day. They do that just to keep their hotel full.

You find some interesting stuff John. Are you hitting any yards or just the road? Love that old house. Sure beats the Yuppie tract mansions they build today.

I was there for 2 and a half hours and not one car came down the road. You do have to keep watch. Saturday, I had a car come up behind me. They drive slow on the dirt road and it is in town. Most people drive on the paved roads.

I have stayed out of the yards so far. Everyone seems friendly and is interested in what I am doing. Of course I would probably be wanting to know what that guy is doing next to my house. If opportunity presents itself I will be happy to MD their yard. I am finding some old coins and artifacts so the yards would be a plus. It is almost like being in the country. The houses were originally built on many acres of land. Many have orange groves and gardens behind them. There are some new homes on the dirt roads.

Question for you John what do you use to clean your coins. Happy New Years and Happy Hunting would appreciate any advice on that.

I think there are better people then me to answer this question.

There are many ways to clean coin. We each have are favorite. The cleaning issue has a lot to do with your coin's destination. If I have junk clad, I throw them in white vinegar over night. It usually make them clean enough to spend. Many people use a rock tumbler.
I use vinegar to clean some of my finds other then coins. I had things I thought was a total loss and could not read the inscription on them. Vinegar cleaned them up nicely.
If you want to preserve the value of an old coin, they say do nothing. I had a coin dealer tell me he cleans them in baby oil. The coins I want to preserve, I clean in baby oil. If they are in ruff shape I soak them in soapy water over night. My thought is, most of my coins are attacked by acids in the soil. Soap is alkali, so it may stop farther decay. I then put baby oil on them to protect them and it make them look nicer. I put them in a coin display card, with the coin's date, the date and place I found it. I have a book with pages for pennies, dimes etc. I have pages for the foreign coins I find also. I love a deep red detailed looking penny or a brilliant mercury dime. Fl. soil gives up some clean coins. I play a game. I try to find a coin for every year. I can't buy it or have it given to me. I have to find it. It may not be cost affective. Some coins I find are not worth the paper I put them in. I have 2006 and back. Some day all the clad will rot away and I will have some shinny clad coins.

This web site will help you.
