The OLD whites detectors...???????

Old Katz

New member
Who out there is knowledgeable about the Old Whites
detectors. Were they the Classics? I think Bill or someone
had said something about these months back.

I stopped at a RaceWay where people come in with the campers and trailers
and spend the weekend to watch the auto races. I asked the guy if I could MD
around the sites where the campers congregate and he said fine. Turns out he
has an old Whites detector he bought from someone years ago. He thought it might be the
Classics.

I told him I'd check here and see what anyone could tell him about it, whether there
are coils for it this late in the game, whether the classics on Kellyco are the same etc.

I plan to go back there tomorrow and MD. I'd like something to bring him.

You need more information. If it's a Classic it could be an old big box, it could be a newer SL type, or an entirely different horse which are the new Kellyco classics. Rob

I've been using White's metal detectors since 1987.

It doesn't matter if its a blue box, black box, SL, Classic, etc, etc, (as long as it is a VLF) it probably operates at a frequency of 6.5 kHz which means that any of the black max or blue max coils should work. However, you will need a new lower rod because of the different bolt configeration of the older white coils vs the newer black ones. The eclipse coils will not work because they are at a different frequency.

Of course, a quick phone call (or email) to White's to confirm wouldn't hurt.

Good Luck!

I have an "OLD" and "Classic" White's being repaired right now. It is a White's Little Monster BFO that dates to the late '60s and has a 6" wood-housed search coil.

Just how "OLD" do you consider a detector needs to be to get that classification?

Also, there are many models that we might consider to be a "CLASSIC" or "VINTAGE" unit, and then there was the "CLASSIC SERIES."

The White's Classic SERIES were two categories. The earlier versions that were in a more squarish control housing and powered by 3-9Volt batteries, and the latter Classic SL models that use the same slim-line box and drop-in 8-AA battery tray as the XLT, MXT and other current offerings.

All of the Classic series detectors operate at 6.59 kHz, however there are some differences in the circuitry. The earlier 3-9V powered Classic I, II, and III models use the old-style search coils. The older-housed Classic III PLUS uses the newer Blue max series of coils.

The Classic 1 SL has a hard-wired coil, and the Classic II SL only uses the older-series of coils (pre-BlueMax). The Classic III SL, Classic ID, Classic IDX and IDX Pro all use the BlueMax series of coils, which include:

BlueMax 350 (4"),
BlueMax 600/5.3 Black Max/5,3 BullsEye (all similar 6

Sooo there more classics than I can shake a stick at.
He confirmed that he has a classic but didn't give me any more detail than that.
Its one of the old one's though, since he bought it from his friend 10 years back for $70.00

I had a Whites Goldmaster VSAT for over 15 years that I justed imaginary nuggets with in AZ, NV, and OR. I never found a single nugget with it and had to constantly adjusted the ground balance with it. I bought my MXT 7 to 8 months ago and found in NV, 4 nuggets the first week that I used it nugget hunting. I came back to MI 2 months ago and have found a dozen rings (one is a 1/4 carat diamond solitair), an 1882 IH, a 1897 barber dime, and my favorite, a half dozen HOT WHEELS!:detecting: The technology is out of the dark ages and the detectors today are much better. However, there are those that will swear that the old cars that only got 60,000 miles between head jobs were better than the newer cars that can get 300,000 miles before major work.

I have a CoinMaster 4900/D and is still good. I've found more with it than I have with my newer ones, XLT and MXT. I guess I should send it in for a checkup so it continues to serve me well..
