the old well in the woods

hi everyone, here are pics of the old well and cistern that lead me to the old mansion site in the woods. such things are getting rarer to see by the day; it's been years since iv'e seen an intact one anywhere. i found coins and relics dating to the 1820's on this site, and i had a great time searching it. it was stuccoed at some point in the past. when your're walking through the woods, and see this, it's enough to get the blood up! enjoy, and hh,

WOW, That is So Cool
I found one intact a few months ago,but it was filled
with dirt and debris as was the basement
You have certainly made some Fantastic finds there , WTG.
Thanks for posting the Great pics.

Terri

didja git down there?..maybe find something interesting!

Wow, that is cool!!!! Way to go!!!

I just founs 4 wells at the boy scout camp that I have been going to, but you can only see down 3 feet at best (they are filled with wood and junk). But they are stone lined and about 3 feet across. I want to try to clear some of the branches and stuff out so I can see a little bit deeper (hopefully then I will be able to see the bottom).

oh yeah, i have thought about what might be down there, but how could it be done safely?a good answer eludes me on this. the rim is about 3 ft. round, and is about 20' deep. hh,

4x4 board over the hole.
Rope ladder attached to board.

and
oh yeah..

One of those big snake wrangling sticks.

Have fun!

Honestly Gray Ghost, It's not worth the effort and risk to go down there. There isn't anything down there that is worth your life over. Besides, you would have to bury it back up too. Wouldn't want anyone to fall in after you and get hurt either. Now digging a privy is a different story. The bottle finds are as good, or in some cases, better than the coins we find. Could easily recoup the cost of your machine. Either way permission and safety would be advisable. Detecting is easier. HH

those are cool looking,it would be curious to see what would come out of those, but idon't think i would risk going down there! i've heard all kinds can go wrong, cave ins, dangerous gases, just to name a couple. but if you do, don't go alone.some top side contraption would be good!
hh!

you are very right, coinnut. iv'e been hunting the old place for over a month now, and i'm satisfied with what iv'e found. no need to go down in the old well. i can see the article now..."30 years after disapearance, metal detectorist found in well. still stuck, but in the meantime...could somebody give him a cold beer and a smoke? and a razor. thanks." hh, and thanks, coinnut.

do you think you can put an adjustable ladder down the hole??? That would be my advise.

If you are really curious about what is on the bottom I would rig up a metal bucket on a rope and just drop it in and drag the bottom. I would NOT go down myself. Too big a chance of cave in or getting getting stuck. My trade journals have an article about every other month about a cavein of a ditch. Not alot of people survive a cavein even with people standing 3 feet away. Please don't go down there.
