The Old Road to Fort Smith Hunt

I took a few hours to hunt a good site that is infested with iron. Not only did I want to find goodies but also to see what some of the readings were telling me that I might pass by otherwise. I then tested on an old clad quarter that is about 8

I did a lot of testing with Audio 1 in the field swtiching between audio 1 and normal to see how much difference there is between the two. Audio 1 will really drag out an audio signal from iron so it is not the one to use in heavy iron in my opinion. On large iron the sound goes on way to long in my opinion. However, in clean ground it will bring out those real deep sounds with a nice clean digital readings.

I went out on Thursday and dug all those 0-31 readings and not 1 of them was a coin. Most were pieces of tin off of old cans, the others just disapeared after the hole was dug. I also seen something else I got these when I had the sensitivity at manual 25, but when I went to auto many of these never gave a signal, or broken up to know it was not a good signal.
To me a 31 conductivity reading has been trash items and talking to my hunting buddies they say the same thing, but one did say he seen a few coins read 31 on his XS that was with iron.

I use semi-auto which may account for many I don't dig. I appreciate knowing what you hit at 31. I was thinking of trying to construct some kind of chart of the readings for actual in the soil targets for the forum. I realize there will be some differences but expect the number to be a little different. I did a lot of testing targets and if the coil is not centered the reading will change by a few digits.
Have a great day,
HH, Cody

Number changing is something I notice a lot too when not centered correctly or even comming from a differnt direction. This is why if it is repeatable I like to try to come at it from a differnt direction to see what numbers I can all get. I tell most around here that look at the numbers too much and tell me where there numbers read that are not the correct one, if it sound good work the coil around it and see what you get. Somewhere you will get the correct numbers. These 31 numbers i was getting were consistence the same with the tones in manual sensitivity, but were not as great of a signal in auto, but were fairly repeatable. I have dug good targets that dont sound as good as what these 31 sound, so this is why I feel if I get a lock on 31 it is a trash item, but if the numers are just jumping to 31 once in a while those I will check out more.

Cody,

I find that for a rusty nail the ferrous reading can move greatly to the right when it is under the outer rim of the coil. What is your experience in this area?
HH,
Glenn

A rusty nail or iron in the general shape of a nail will skew all the way to silver. As I sweep over the target from different directions then I know or at least think I know if it is a coin or rusty iron.
I think learning to use the sweep of the coil is a major factor in conjunction with searching with a pattern in SS or IM. We can at least double the detectors ability to discriminate just by learning how to sweep the coil and knowing what it is telling us.

Could you please share your personal experience in this sweeping practice?
