The old mansion in the woods... meets my cibola

GRAY GHOST

New member
hello all, i had heard about an old mansion in the woods near my house some time ago, but had never had the chance to look for it - until 2 days ago. it took a while, but i found it! expecting to find standing ruins, i looked around a while and spied a whitish box off in the distance, being obscured by trees. i thought at first it was a discarded fridge, it turned out to be a circular hand cast brick well about 20 ft. deep. someone had stuccoed the outside of the well in the past. i was in awe of the simple craftsmanship of the well itself. there are piles of handcast brick everywhere. i knew now i was on it! the area is a bit trashy, being used as a dump by somebody in the past. i found a civil war era reed for a harmonica, a shot 36 cal. ball, a small brass cross about a half in. across [?] an iron belt buckle, a triangular iron piece, [ possibly a gun part ] 3 [!!!] flat buttons, and a civil war era portable candle holder, made of solid brass, unscrews wonderfully, and with a patent date of april 21, 1857 ! yes! i really knew i was onto it now! my heart was a beatin, my friend! i also found some cannon shrapnel pieces and some modern clad, as well as other misc. pieces. i believe the old place to be unhunted, and plan to be back there in the a.m. theres also ball and mason lids everywhere. the wooden piece is my first bullet-in-wood. i will take pics of the old well and hopefully whatever i find tommorow evening. all the signs are there! thanks for reading, what a great adventure our hobby can be, hh,

Darn, Wish I could be there. The pictures shows you are digging everything. THATS GOOD. This site will pay off for you and can be hunted for a very long time without being overworked. Don't forget to look along the old path from the well to the house. The old place I am working has given up some good coins between the two. Even if the path is not now visable you can still pretty well locate it by the obvious direction it takes to get to either one from the other. Also look to each side of the path. Good Job Gray Ghost. If you give up on this place just call me. Bubba2

I forgot to add in my above reply. Don't forget to find the old outhouse. There could be more than one of these. When I grew up in the country we would move the outhouse every so often(3 or 4 years) and dig a new hole usually close to the old hole and then move the house to it. The dirt out of the new hole would go into the old hole. When you find the outhouse and decide to go Dukey Diving be careful to not break any good bottles that may be in there. In the bottom of the Dukey hole you may find some loose change among other things. Dukey Diving is safe because all the ingrediants that went into it are now turned to good old mother earth. Bubba2

Fun - work the site hard, you just never know what might turn up.

The small brass cross you spoke about look's like a percussion cap from a old black powder rifle, i could be wrong.....hh kd

hello all, heres a closer view of the brass cross i found the other day, it appears to have a small rivet in the center and all 4 edges are upturned. i initially thought it was a cap too, until i got it cleaned up. if anybody could tell me what it is, that would be great. thanks, and hh,

i will take that! just something about the piece...that was different from the several other perc caps i had found in the past. thanks, td!

and clean this place out! If I were hunting it I would take it all as it appears that this place is pretty old and maybe holding some good stuff.
Good luck!

I think they had a couple of different kinds.

But that's what happens to them when they are shot.

I threw a couple of them away because I thought they were trash.

Never claimed to be smart:blink:
