I finally finished with the chores around here late this afternoon and headed for the old Boy Scout Camp located on the ranch just east of us. I used my Tesoro Bandido II uMax with the small 4" coil. I have never used this coil before and I must admit, it looked small when compared to the 8" coil that came with my detector. I had decided to try the smaller coil because of all the iron trash at the site. I also took my 8" coil just in the event the smaller coil did not work very well.
I hunted for almost three hours, but must confess that I did use the 8" coil for the last hour of hunting.
Results:
one silver quarter: 1950
three silver dimes: 1939, 1951, 1959
six nickels, one was a war nickel
one small silver ring
one small Scout emblem
three clad quarters
eleven clad dimes
forty-two penneys (Both wheat and modern)
I used the 4" coil around the fire pits and trees, and finally the 8" coil in the more open area. The deepest coin found with the 4" coil was three inches, deepest coin found with the 8" coil was approximately eight inches. All four of the silver coins were found with the 8" coil and were from six to eight inches deep. The silver ring and small Scout emblem were found with the 4" coil at approximatey two inches deep.
While the 4" coil allowed me to get close to the rock fire pits, it just did not have the depth needed for this site. Evidently the silver coins are too deep for the depth capable of attaining with the 4" coil. I must note that most of the trash at the site are pieces of iron, and there is not an abundance of pull tabs...strange.
I suspect that the new 5.75 coil will be ideal for this site. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="">
