The mysterious man in black.

Most of you guys know that winter beach hunting above the bikini line can be very challenging. This year hunting on Florida's Gulf Coast seems to be tougher than normal. Except for the man in black. He has been spotted here and there hunting just past the sand bars during slack wave action times. Glassing him from our balconies, we all agree he seems to know what he's doing out there. He's clad in an all black, fairly new wet suit with hood. Got a new looking scoop with the widest mouth I've seen. His weapon, a pretty new excal. Us guys are all in our mid sixtys, and he's younger, but no teenager. Finally a buddy (Mr. Dual Field) from up the beach a little had a chance to chat him up a little. This time he only hunted about 2hours. Almost $5 in clad , couple pieces of silver. Pretty impressive seeing a army of us couldn't match that on the dry. I got a wet suit, and yesterday it was pretty calm, but- A bitter wind from the north, overcast skies, & wind chill kept this 66 yr old on the dry. So if you're equipped, and got some Sabie, there's Treasure to be had. Hope I can get out there before I leave.

That sounds like a plan there!...it would be interesting to get to know this guy a bit more...is he a local? Young but possibly super experienced? Or maybe not...Why is he hunting where he is? New top notch gear dont necessarily mean he knows anything...but if he's rabid about this Sport as bad as you guys are, and hits it hard, having top notch gear cant hurt!

You guys should make a point of finding out if this Man In Black can be a local resource to you...He could become a valuable friend and guide to some hot spots if He's local?...Or, he might not be nothing than another damn Yankee who rented a condo! Go chat him up good and proper! Good Luck Dancer and Crew! Keep us posted!:clapping:

Just sounds like a hunter who is a little smarter than the average bear (boo boo).. also seems as though he is hunting were few dare to venture on the gulf side of the sandbar...this area may also be more susceptible to sand movement.... a good understanding of a good machine, thinking a little outside of conventional thinking ,playing a few hunches,strategy.... sooner or later those targets run out of places to hide... i get a little humbled when someone hunting the same general area as me has much more success than me but it makes me realize that im the one who has to adjust my game... but really at the end of the day it isnt so much about the finds as it is about whether you had fun or not...however it always seems the fuller the pockets the greater the pleasure...so get out there and give him a run for his money.... good luck and stay safe...

Lol!!! You guys get nothing on the dry, your targets are elsewhere - in the water!! He's got it all to himself and he knows it!! Get in there with a PI and take what he misses! Better yet - get the rest before he comes back! Yar, matey!

Me and a couple of buddies did what i call HARD TIME yesterday. Out for 5 to 7 hours. Right now hes out there because everything between that sand bar and shore line is sanded in. We hunted out there yesterday as well at low tide..... sounds like he got more change that we did combined. Yes targets with surfaces are moving out there.... the rest is getting buried with the pushed up sand. You can tell the ole timers by the faded blue or green sticker on their machines.... they are out there in the sun a LOT. Dont know that id be wearing that hood.... cuts down on the volume. He did good...... but its 50 50 right now with the amount of good targets maybe going to the beach hunters. More traffic and not many getting in..... looking for those targets missed by the recent drop guys is tuff. YOu do a lot of COMMUNITY SERVICE when beach digging, but with the cool weather and flat sand because of the rain you can gain a couple of inches in depth right now. Good time to be using that DF in knee to waist deep water. If you think we are getting a little rock and row, think what the other side of the island gets......all the time.

I did 3 vacations on the mid Gulf Coast detecting the dry sand, and it truly was "community service" cleaning the beach. Last year I got myself a Sovereign so I could get the good stuff but the shallow water hunting did not produce.
This year maybe I will pack my wet suit and get a true water machined and get out to that sand bar. The winter water temps of the Gulf are the summer water temps here in Atlantic Canada so not a real shock to us hearty Canadians. The Gull Stream is way off the coast of Nova Scotia and our biggest water temperature is the frigid Labrador current.

The real treasure is just being at the beach and having fun and meeting other people escaping winter. Another foot of snow falling tonight  Second 1 foot snow storm this week!
PI or Minelab???????????

If you are talking FL..... id go with an Xcal. The PI isnt going to get that much more depth on the targets you are looking for. A PI is a nitch machine that some can make pay off. But you are better off getting an Xcal paying for it quickly then if you want a PI pick one up. You can cover a lot of sand with the Xcal or grid smaller areas with the PI..... either way you aint getting it all. When its sand in ...its sanded in. If that Xcal is running REAL quiet in PP.... then there isnt much mineralization ... which means clean deep sand and that extra couple of inches you might get with a PI will have you only digging junk/floaters.
