"The MXT Edge" by Jeff Foster

Now that this book has been out for awhile, have many people read it? Those who have, what did you gain from it?

You see, I have been thinking of getting a backup detector, and figured this book would be a whole lot cheaper!

Seriously, what would be a good backup for parks and schoolgrounds?

Well I picked up an IDX and a 5.3 coil this December. It is a 6.5 khz instead a 14khz machine. It is also very good in trash and nails. I used it and liked it and have sent it for the Mr. Bill's mods. I think it makes a good backup to the MXT. Rob

I have read the book.. I can highly recommend it to all MXT owners.
For a back up detector for parks & school playgrounds I would recommend the IDX Pro if you can locate a good used one. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with the ACE 250 made by Garrett.

I agree with those that have already recommended an IDX or IDX Pro. Either one especially if it has Mr. Bill

Hey Scott, The book is worth the money if you own an MXT. It has a wealth of information. I am still reading mine. In regards to a backup detector, I would recommend getting one that you can get diffrent coils for it. Good luck with your decision. Dennis in Idaho

The book is easily worth twice the price. Not only does it give you insight on all aspects of the MXT it explains why and how it does what it does. Tons of info you will not get from the factory manual. Puts you way ahead in the learning curve and plenty of info for the person that has been using the MXT for long time. It's not like reading a boring manual, you won't be able to put it down. I know this sounds like a commercial but it is just the way I see it.

Back up detector? I bought a used IDX Pro off EBAY with an extra coil, bag and accessories for 250.00. I use it in parks and heavy trash areas. I can really chew up some ground with it. Excellent back up.

ANYBODY WITH A NEW MXT? GET THE BOOK, IT'S A NECESSITY, NOT AN OPTION.

Hi Jeff,

You are absolutely right. The IDX and IDX Pro is missing those features you mentioned. However, the recovery time of these machines seems even faster than an MXT, making them outstanding in high trash areas. And, an MXT does not have a volume control either unless you want to change the sensitivity at the same time.

It was those IDX and IDX Pro shortcomings you mentioned that caused me to suggest an XL Pro as an alternate backup choice in an earlier post. The XL Pro has an analog meter instead of a digital readout. The numbers on the XL Pro meter face correspond fairly closely to the VDI numbers from an MXT. Like an MXT, an XL Pro will indicate very accurate coin depths when using the stock coil. When properly adjusted an XL Pro will search very deep. An XL Pro operates at 6.59 kHz making it a bit more sensitive to higher conductive targets than an MXT. An XL Pro will not only be a good backup for an MXT, it has features that will compliment the performance of an MXT.

I own and use all 4 of the models mentioned in this post.

Good luck and have fun, Bob

The XL Pro is no longer in production. New ones are VERY hard to find. I do see used XL Pros for sale occasionally. If you buy a good used XL Pro, you will not be sorry. Be sure to get one of the 6 and 1/2 inch round coil also. They are called a 5.3 Bullseye and a 5.3 Black Max .... don't know why White's used the 5.3 in the name. The XL Pro and 6 and 1/2 inch coil combination is a great coin finder ...... and it nails silver rings.

Good luck and have fun, Bob

You got the right idea! I read it (I own a M-6,bought right after was introduced) Some of the tech was hard to get through, that said ,it was like having a better machine in the field after!! every MDTers should read this Thanks Jeff Foster.

The book, "The MXT Edge," is widely available through participating local White's dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada, and will soon be available at participating White's dealers in the U.K. (Regton Ltd., sole U.K. distributor).

Availability includes Findmall sponsors (here's a post from Backwoods Detectors).

Here's the link to the press release with more info: The MXT Edge press release.

Enjoy.
